Hi, I have searched this topic to death and it hasn't got me close enough to a descion.

I weigh 85kgs, ride a carbon hard tail 29er and not scared of the technical rocky stuff. My tyre choice is Geax Saguro.

I have narrowed my choice down to three wheelsets

American Classic std

American Classic wide lightning

Hope 2 hubs with ztr arch ex rims

What would you choose and is this what you ride?

I ride the Wide Lightnings, awesome rims, and running low low pressures (1.3-1.4), but I only weight 68kg, so go figure. They do offer something the narrower rims can't and that's more volume to the tyre as well as getting to edge knobs quicker. Have put them through some rough stuff and they are holding up to the abuse, although I ride a softtail.

With your weight I would say go for the Arch EX's to be safe, but they're heavier than the AC's.

Running RaRa and RoRo combo in 2.25. Will be looking at changing to Maxxis Ikon or Spez Fast Tracks when they're done, Not too happy with the RoRo front grip ...

Do you want to keep the old ones as a second wheelset - asking cos I quite like my DT swiss hubs and would consider just building new rims onto them if I didn't want a 2nd wheelset

Some people complain about the hub engagement on the AC's but for me it's fine, faster than my standard Giant hubs I had. Slower than the Hopes probably, but not a train smash in any way.

All the above are top wheels.  The Wide Lightening look pretty robust.  I don't go for aluminium nipples though.  The Arch EX are proven but I would check whether anyone has had issues with the Geax tires because I remember a few disasters with them on the ZTR Crests.  If you go for the Hope hubs you can look at the WTB KOM i23 or the Sun Ringle Helix rims as well.  All similar prices and you can choose your spokes and nipples.

Last question, I'm online about to purchase. Evobikes site gives me the impression that the wheelset includes the 15mm adaptor. Is this the standard for these wheels, adaptors included?

I was considering the wide lightning wheelset, but the rim width is wide at 32mm. I decided on the American Classic MTB Race wheelset with a slightly narrower rim of 28mm. The MTB race wheelset weighs only 1,425 grams, which I think is the lightest aluminium wheelset that you can get.  Rider weight limit is 95kg. They also look easy enough to service with standard bearings. I bought a pair from Summit Bikes in Cape Town after seeing an ad on the Hub http://summitbikes.co.za/index.php? and must say that their service was excellent (I live in Mauritius and everything was done on the phone and email).  The shop included a 142 x 12 axle and also a few extra spokes. I think the adopters come with the wheelset. Getting them on Saturday and can’t wait.

I bought a set from Janos (Evobikes) a week ago, it comes with QR and T/A front and rear
