Hi Guys

My partner and I were scheduled to ride this year but unforeseen circumstances resulted in us transferring our entry to the 2016 race.

I've been wondering how this year compared to previous and pulled the following from the Epic website's results page

Year - Teams Finished

2010 - 445

2011 - 495

2012 - 481

2013 - 496

2014 - 522

2015 - 510

Is there any correlation between the amount of official finishers and difficulty of the route?

Well done to everyone that entered and gave it a go!  Non finishers and finishers..

You guys are awesome

Well, this will be a lively discussion for the HubSA tribunal.

Hehehehe.

Yes, the tougher the route, including atmospheric conditions, can adversely affect performance (greater risk of technicals, crashing, mental deterioration and plain exhaustion) which in turn will lead to drop-out.

Can you include amount of starters for each year too?

its been 1200 since 2005...

Capped entry is 1200(600 teams). But how many don't rock up to the start? I would imagine for a race like that the entered to not starting ratio would be very low. Its not like some 1 day race where you wake up and don't feel well so don't race. As a matter of interest id like to know how many start the prologue.

622 teams started the prologue with 621 teams completing the prologue. The 1200 cap is the theory until the sponsors come begging for just one more entry for their very special client!!

there may be an actual variance of a few riders every year if someone fallen ill but they are not classified as DNS but rather as DNF so they are included in the start stats since they registered and received their numbers

individual finishers are not recognized in the finisher stats.

AFAIK they get medals but no official time. Getting a medal means that they finished. Officially or unofficially and should probably be included when calculating attrition. If the Epic changes formats in future to single riders, the finisher stats will be skewed if not taken into account.

If you a top UCI racer they do make an exception to put you in.

Getting a medal means the organiser recognises your achievement in completing the course. The event remains a two person team event and only recognises teams in its finishing stats. Magazines may publish other data as a matter of interest.
