IMSA has only sold out in its 10th year race due to all the hype.  Cant see it selling out again.  The full IM is definately not the half.  The average Joe with a dream and a bit of training can do a half.  The full IM is not the same.

Only hardcore folk like DaveM can do the full.

Lots of guys were complaining about the new route and said they would not enter unless the route was changed. Ok so it has now changed. Also, with the rands decline coming to ZA to do an ironman and a safari is cheap. Lastly, there are many age group Kona slots on offer so those guys chasing Kona I would of thought would enter.

I expected it to sell out for 2016, but appears I was wrong. I think the price goes up end of January so maybe there is a flurry..

Is the change on the Cycling route only for this year?

apparently yes, but who knows. There was much resistance to the route for 2014/5 and maybe the organisers listened. The new route also make it less of logistical exercise for the PE municipality.... however the downside is that we wont see the PE folks on the first 10km of the lap.

I believe it will remain this course, less hassle for the locals and metro etc. Also a lot easier to police for the referees

As a first timer could you tell me what the general road conditions are like?

There are changes to the ride and the run.

The run is now 4 laps of 10.5 km instead of 3 laps and has eliminated the spectator free dead spots.

The ride is apparently less intervally and more flowing so should be 'faster'.

Dunno.

See you on the start line or in the crowds!

some of the sections are fairly rough so a number of guys use 25 tyres or even 28. The wind will in all likelihood power us on the first half of the 90km's then hamper us on the next 45km. There are much less high hills so with less elevation than 2015 and some assistance with the wind times should be good. The new course wil lbe fairly boring though , that's the trade off I spose.

Some of the guys reckon the road is very rough, I did not think it too bad so I guess its what you used to. I used 23 tyres and had no issues.

it is what it is... you pays your money and takes yr chances

Not close to being ready for the race but for some reason really looking forward to giving it a go for the first time, wind and bad road included.

sorry for being a little off topic.sat past on my long ride broke a spoke and had to hitch a lift back home.spoke being replaced and should have bike back this afternoon.now I am worried about the other spokes breaking as that would be the end of my bike ride.my question is why do spokes break? should I have replaced all the spokes? had nightmares about breaking spokes over the weekend.

I had that once but was due to hitting something. Perhaps you should let the guys know what wheels you riding. Post a pic.

Would I be correct in thinking that the 25mm tyres offer a more comfortable ride?  Surely 25mm tyres create more resistance in the road, or am I wrong here?

Firstly, straight off the bat I aint no scientist and certainly no expert on the matter so treat what I say with the proverbial pinch of salt...

Intuitively 25mm would offer more resistance on the road however science seems to indicate that it offers less. This being due to the amount of contact actually on the road.

Secondly, 25 mm tyres are able to be pumped up to lower pressures thus the ride is actually more comfortable.

Again, i am sure people with far more knowledge than i may contradict and/or add to my brief synopsis above. I will be using my standard 23 mm tyres that i bought in preparation for Ironman a while ago. Not even sure my bike can take a 25 on the rear.

should be fine with 23's but if more comfort is needed 25's or 28's are an option

A 25mm tyre has a greater contact area with road and would therefore on a perfectly smooth road offer greater rolling resistance.

A 25mm tyre has approximately 50% more volume in it than a 23mm tyre! This offers a greater ability to absorb shocks.

On a rough surface, the larger tyre is more compliant to the imperfections enabling it to roll over the bump. A smaller harder tyre would impact the imperfection harder. This resistant energy is transferred to the frame resulting in vibration which causes reduction in forward motion and fatigue to the rider.

The bad section of coastal road in PE appears to have been resurfaced with a thin coat of tar many years ago. This has broken down in many places resulting in effectively a two layer surface. This creates an almost constant vibration which is very unpleasant. The difference of using a 25mm tyre on the front wheel is enormous and instantly noticeable.

In EL, the N2 is smooth but made from coarse stone chips so it looks quite rough. I don't think a 25mm tyre would give the same benefit on this type of surface.

The M4 in Durban used by 70.3 and TriRock is like a roller rink. A hard narrow tyre would offer less resistance on this surface.

all correct however a point I recall reading is that a 25mm tyre pumped up to the same pressure as a 23 tyre will actually have less resistance as the contact patch is smaller. while the contact patch would be wider it would be less long (my phrase) thus resulting in a smaller area in contact with the road.

There is of course a penalty to pay as the tyre will weigh more.

So the jury's out...thank you for the input Davem & IceCreamMan - seems 25 mm may be the way to go.  I'm due for new tyres so will see if the bike can accommodate the wider version.  I'll test before PE.  So if i'm on 7 bar with 23mm do you have any idea of what pressure in the 25mm will be the equivalent?
