I thought they were already like this?

With mine the long lever can do 3 shifts and the small lever 2 shifts from new.

Then I may well have the older edition XT, because mine can only shift up 1 and down 2... The modifications allows you to do 2 up and 3 down minus the grand price difference.

The only XTR part that is made from separate moulds and process are the cranks. The calipers, brake master cyclinder, shiter mechanisms are all common parts with little details like springs and detents that changes the tactile response for the user. With XTR you buy a lot of titanium.

XTR also has ball bearings in the shiter where XT has a bush that fits in the same space. So for example XTR may have to support bearings for the lever shaft where XT will have a bearing on the end with higheset load  and a bush on the other, while SX will have two bushes

XTR also undergoes more post machining to reduce weight and create different aesthetics across the product line

Ya and Saint is like XTR in respect of the bearings and functionality. It also has an all ali lower lever unlike XT I believe? Anyway, if you are into a 1x10 drivetrain you can sometimes pick up Saint 10s shifters on special online. Mine handles my clutched XT rear derailleur very well. Its also better to spend money on a good shifter rather than an expensive derailleur if you have the choice of one or the other. Bike companies spec fancy derailleurs to sell bikes not increase performance  - or so I have read.

My M780 XT shifter does 2 up and 4 down as standard - no mod ??

Ya exactly, just like Saint and XTR - this mod must apply to the older pre what year versions?
