What should you do when a dog attacks?

I speak dog......so here goes.......

1. You have to make a very quick call on whether it is just a chase and a bit of fun or a real attack. Look at body language and take the breed into account.

2. If not serious, shout loudly at it and continue to ride on. Falling off will hurt more than the dog bite.

3. If serious and outriding it is unlikely, stop ASAP, put the bike between yourself and the dog. Backing up against a wall or a fence is good. Shout very loudly and aggressively at it. The deeper and the more of a growl the better. Short sharp words like no,  sit, voertsek, all sound like a bark and work well.

4. Squirting water in the face works well and tend to stun the dog because they don't understand how you can get to them from a few metres away. It confuses them and give you time to get away.

5. Kicking and hitting is seriously NOT recommended. The dogs reflexes are faster than yours, you are just more likely to get bitten.

6. If you get bitten, use your bike as a weapon, hit it and shove it and be extremely forceful.  Do not use your hands as they will be torn to shreds. Stay on your feet. If you are down or are attacked by a pack of dogs, protect your throat.

Ja, difficult one. I also think trying to stay calm and not make too much noise is probably the best way to deal with an aggressive dog. But having said that, I still got a lekker scar on my left calf from a Boerboel bite a few years ago. And in that case I was really trying hard to cycle past as quietly as possible, avoiding eye contact etc etc. The f***er still got me. So I don't know. I guess it depends on the animal. But from that day, any dog attacking me, must just know that they'll get a cleat sized wound somewhere in their face.

This is the best post i have read in a long time.

Thank you.

Which one?

The one in which I'm being chased by rabid, bloodthirsty animals?

Or the one where a dog almost bites me?  ;)

I did it fairly often back in the Tokai days if there was a troop in or around the parking lot or in the trail. Helps if you have a deep voice to shout it with.

Lol

Having had a house in Scarborough for 10 years one had plenty of opportunity for close up interaction with Eric and his troop.Sadly he has gone to meet his maker.....Boggom

Yelling Fo koff really loud usually works for me.

There is a dog in Zwawelpoort that chases me weekly, we've almost turned it into a little game as I know the runt is going to chase me every second day (I should make it a Strava segment..)

i always carry a can of pepperspray . works on dogs and idiots  BIKEJACKERS/MUGGERS/RAPISTS alike

Yup, agreed. (Just panelbeated it a little.)

And like when using it on humans, keep it as a last resort and for serious self defence. Do not used it just because you are a bit pissed off.

Stop! Get off your bike!

The little **** normally runs away

If he is a big **** and does not that Cannondale is quite handy in knocking the crap out of the dog

What about Pepper spraying the Doggy?

Its harmless for the dog , and the effects wear off in a hour or so . I have never used it as the dogs normally stop when i get of the bike , But i will use it if i have to

I was always being chased by this one poodle , untill i rode towards it to scare it off, unfortunately for the dog i rode over him, well needless to say , was never chased by him/her again.
