Mountain biking while training for Comrades

Anybody out there that has experience of training for the Comrades, whilst still managing to fit in a couple of mtb rides in a week?

Is it possible - run in the week to prep for Comrades and cycle on weekends without jeopardising both?

Some advice needed please.

To quote the advice I got from the comrades coach: Cross training is very good. Something about eccentric muscle loading building strength. He reckons runners who also ride fly up the hills (running).

I think once you get your running up to scratch, when you can be confident that your knees won't pack up, then one would be find.

As long as you still get enough running mileage in, it will be fine. Your mountain biking will also benefit from the running fitness. I've found that since I scaled down on running after Comrades 2012, my cycling fitness hasn't been nearly as good. They really do help each other.

Do you want to finish or have a decent time? Remember most long runs are on the weekend on most training programs so if you riding on the weekends you won't get that long run in every week.

you need to do at least a long run on the weekend. and closer to the time a run on the Saturday and Sunday. Mileage should be 70km per week and up to make the day a little bit easier. So that is 4 10's during the work week and a 30 during the weekend. I did just over 1200km from January and battled to fit in any time on the bike...but there is definitely opportunity to fit a nice ride on one day of the weekend
