Making a skewer

Don't buy a set as those are normally very poor quality. Buy separate machine taps for the size you need with corresponding drill bit. Note drill size = thread dia minus thread pitch so for a 5mm standard thread , pitch of 0.8mm your drill size is 4.2mm. Also for the your application I feel b16 threaded rod is needed as has the flex and tensile strength needed. Another tip get a nut and place it before the length you cut. Once cut round the area slightly and turn the nut off to clean threads.

The answer.

Yup. Quite simple really (if you can weld)

Simply cut the skewer in the middle,

grind a bevel on each cut end,

find similar rod material,

cut to required length,

grind a bevel on each end,

weld skewer halves to each end of new piece,

grind welds smooth.

Tada!

But thinking about it now, depending on the hubs the skewer is going into, the tolerances might be very tight to feed the skewer through the hub, so the welds will need to be machined or ground flat. Not a lot of meat on a skewer and the welds need body or if ground down then very good penetration for there to be sufficient strength.

Isn't the reason for this mission to mount racks/panniers, so this skewer has a lot riding on it, I'd say a single piece of rod threaded is the answer.

OP, HIT ME A PM if you haven't come right, it's really not that difficult to slap one together properly it will cost you a beer one day if we ever meet ;)

If you haven't come right and are in Durbs near Pinetown try Alpha McDelta.  They are mainly welding but are motorcycle enthusiasts and I have seen a few bicycle bits there.  If they cannot help you I am sure they will direct you to someone that can. But expect to pay a minimum of R250 (or nothing if someone is feeling kind).

Clean forgot about them.  Have used them previously.  Excellent work and great bunch of understanding blokes.  Even the cat is friendly!

Thanks for the reminder.
