So 18 months after the conversion unfortunately the valve has given up the ghost :(

2 tips I have picked up recently ....

When you fit a new valve core dip it in some grease/vaseline, prevents that build up of sealant that eventually makes it difficult to inflate.

When a valve does break out of a strip (as they will all eventually do ...) you can buy a replacement Stans valve that simply slips through the hole in the strip!

I did my conversion using a seperate valve, punching a hole in the tube and slipping through..working excellent.I initialy cut a presta from a tube, but that kept leaking by the stem area.I now got a ust valve

To add to the body of experience:  <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Before the Epic I needed to do the conversion and could not find a 20' Presta tube so I settled for a 24' Presta tube which are widely available. Worked like a charm. I've never done it with a 20' tube so can't offer a comparison. I did not even trim of the 10mm of tube sticking out past the rim as I hoped for some extra side wall protection. The foreigners loved that... Used a standard tyre on standard rim, no problems.

On stage 6 i managed to snakebite the tyre 2km from the finish, just plugged and bombed it, no problems.

I've used mine longer than that BB. Where did you get the Stans valve. I had to buy new strips as spares for multiday races.

BigBen hope you dont mind me adding some pictures to your threadEmbarrassed

Did the conversion at home last week' date=' what a mission if you dont have a garage / garden / place to do this in. Took some pics of the conversion ala apartment... turned out quite easy to do using stans and stans rim strips.

Assuming you have the wheels, rim strip ect.. here's some other stuff that comes in handy

Why the shower? Did I mention i live in a flat with no space to work on stuff... well it makes life easier if you can work on the wheel in the upright position and it's easy to contain and clean any excess soapy water / sealant

Make sure the tyre is fitted correctly regarding rotation direction, before you put in any sealant or inflate, it is irritating to find out afterwards while admiring your new conversion that the tyre is the wrong way around...

Then its time to move outside onto the balcony to do the shakey shake, leak test and bucket procedure

While waiting for sealant to do it's trick during?the bucket procedure, time for a quick cuppa

I'm trying to go tubeless with a non ust set of racing ralphs but the sidewalls seem to be leaking like crazy! They only stay inflated for about 2 hours... did you have any similar problems? (using stans fluid)

Karsten Cycles in Pta will do both wheels for approx R500' date=' and their kit is MUCH MUCH better than Joe's or Stans.[/quote']

My Stans strip cracked up, and when I baulked at the R250 to get a new one, my LBS suggested the Stans tape. Looks like thick shiny masking tape. R40 later and a tubeless valve and I'm still riding 2 months later. Downside is if you take it off, you must chuck away and replace with new tape (ie. if I need to replace a spoke)

Lotsa talk about bombing the tubeless in this thread. Be careful, it shrivels all your Stans fluid instantaneously into a solid piece of gloob (I guess it's the cold??. The footpump always works for me.
