Pyga or Spez :-)

Hey Hubbers,

I am thinking of getting either a Pyga OneTen 29 or Specialized FSR Stumpjumper.

I do some longish rides, 40 - 60km, but mostly local trails on weekends.

Also do the odd event race for fun.

Has anyone ridden both ? or have some opinion on the better option for the best all-round bike ?

Replies appreciated,

W.

Went through a similar decision few months ago (Pyga One10 29 vs Spec Camber carbon). Rode the Spez and liked it but just not enough.

Everywhere I looked people said if you like the Camber you'll love the Pyga. So that's what I ended up blowing the Randellas on and have never looked back.

Would recommend you pop in at a Spez concept store (such as Westrand Cycles) as most of them have a few demo's they let you ride for a couple of days. Great service and way to see what you think of Spez.

If you do go the Spez route, keep in mind that they box you in in terms of servicing

Dont confuse the Camber with the Stumpjumper. The Stumpy is the boss. Camber does not quite know if it wants to be a Epic or a trail shredder. Pyga is nice, but go ride a stumpjumper. Its fantastic.

this is one of those topics that i cant make any sense of, why would you get a pyga when you can get a carbon bike (Read: Giant, Rocky, Spaz, Trek (which is pretty much the same bike only carbon)) for a similar price!

For me, this is an awkward time of the year to buy a new bike, as most manufacturers are staring to release their 2016 models. If I were you, rather short-list a few manufacturers and models and see what the 2016 models will look like.

Case in point: for 2016 Spez has completely revamped the Stumpy FSR range. It's a brand new line of bikes with a host of new features, whereas the Pyga is the same as it has been for the past few years.

Depending on budget, have a look at something like the 2016 Stumpy FSR Comp Carbon. The Pyga is horribly overpriced for an alu frame and simply can't compete with the Spez in terms of value or ride.

There is nothing the Spez can't do, that the Pyga can. However, there is a hell of a lot that the Spez can do that the Pyga can't.

What do you mean wrt the comment on service, that they box you in? Do they require you to have it serviced by them only?

Best to ride them both and give them a thrashing. You'll soon see which is the bike for you.

I have a 110. It is built like a Russian truck and have done somewhere between 5 and 10000 hassle free kays on it. It is an extremely forgiving bike and makes me look like I actually have more talent than I do.. I've never bothered to look if there is a max weight limit on the 110, on the Stumpy you're looking at around 110kgs through to 130, so if you're in Tread Buffalo class like I am it might have an influence on the bike you choose.

Trek also have a few bikes with full floating suspension like the Pyga, so might be worth looking at them too.

I'm curious, what can the Spez do that the Pyga can't?

Do yourself a favour and read up on the new 2016 Stumpy FSR. It'll answer that question.

Got nothing better to do tonight,so just did. I see they're finally going with slacker angles, wonder when Pyga will think of this. Might drop Pat a line and suggest this startling development to him!

Still have proprietary rear shock, so expect to get spanked on that, and they're horribly overpriced, starting with the alu bike right through to tupperware versions. For a mass market bike you'd think they could try do a little better with their pricing.

They're also still graded to Condition 4, which means that Spez thinks they can only go over small jumps. They don't specify what a small jump is, so good luck with any warranty claims..

So all told, I can't find anything particularly special about them that they can do better than the Pyga.

In the end, the OP should ride both bikes and get the one that puts the biggest smile on his face.
