Pedal question

Hi all. My wife has mountain bike shoes and cleats. Did one argus with them and asked me to remove it for her. I recently few years later started cycling with clipless pedals and I am loving it.

She is keen on trying again. she used those double sided clipless pedals, that is flats on the one side and clipless on the other.

Is this crapy pedals the reason she might not like it? She complained that the release action didnt work.

Will a more expensive pedal be the solution? Or is mountain shoes just more difficult to get loose? I only have road shoes so I cant realy make that comparison. We only ride road, and both are on road bikes.

I also started with double sided pedals and then moved onto proper pedals (shimano 520's) and then onto flats (but thats another story).

I do believe that the proper pedals are better and work a lot smoother, also easier to get into as you don't have just one side to aim for.

Something that might be of interest if your wife is still getting used to clipless is to invest in a pair of multi release cleats instead of the standard ones that come with most pedals.  They release much easier and in more directs, also set release spring to its easiest setting, then as time goes by and she gets used to them you can tighten the spring and go back to the normal cleats.

Yes. Those pedals are shaite for both clipping in and use as a legitimate flat pedal. They SUCK.

You'll have much more success going for either a PDM 520/540 type SPD pedal, or the DX type pedals like these...

That, or get her a proper set of flat pedals for use with trainers, skate shoes or 5-10's. Either option you WILL be paying more money for, but both are good. For a beginner though, I'd almost insist on flats...

The standard ones that come with pedals are the SM-SH53, multi release are the below.

Cool thanks guys.

She has been using flats for about three years now with some old school toe clip straps, and "normal" shoes.

It might be peer pressure because her father and me moved over within a week of each other.  :whistling:  :whistling:.

I think Ill by the multi release and let her try again with the crap  pedals, and if it is better, ill invest in proper pedals. since she already have the shoes, i think she will have to settle for MTB pedals.

Its gets a bit expensive if you have to buy shoes, pedals and cleats.

aaaaaaaaargh!!!

No. Remove those, now.

And if those "flats" are those black plastic jobbies or the steel ones that resemble a bear trap (jagged peaks) then they are not, I repeat, NOT, Flat pedals. They are deathtraps and offer no grip. What. So. EVER.

Throw them in the bin. Then take out the bin bag, stick it behind your car, reverse over it about 10 times, drop it in your fireplace / braai / weber, cover it in lighter fluid and kill it with fire.

I kid you not. Please.

get proper road pedals and shoes  and proper cleats - spds belong on a mountain bike and those other sorts of pedal things are for commuting and kids (get second hand gear if you want to save some money )

no body is confident with junk pedals on the road

you can adjust the clip tension to be loose to begin with to make clipping in/out easier

its all about contact points

Lol.

only thing I wouldn't do is put them in my weber - you dont want to taint a perfectly good braai with the bad karma those pieces of shite attract.

Rather drill a really deep hole and see if you can reach the pits of hell and throw them in there...

Many people are confident with SPD pedals on the road.
