How do you gage your selling price and your buying price?

Some oaks on these classifieds are crazy. I have seen a 2011 ,26er with pretty crap spec and he wanted like 13k or something crazy. But I am trying to sell a decent road bike at the moment and struggling to get 6k. Not easy to judge. But in the same vain, some guys want things for free. And expect you to sell a 3 year old bike for 1/15 of what you paid new.

The way I see it is like this:

If I buy 2nd hand from a private individual, then the bike is without a frame warranty, even if he just wheeled it out of the shop. Thus, for an "as new" bike I will only pay up to 75% of the new shop price. That way I feel it makes it worth my while to carry the risk of having no warranty.

If the bike has any significant wear on it or will need parts replaced, the cost for that gets subtracted too.

For every year the bike is old, I take off another 10 %

That is where I pitch my offer

If it is a very desirable bike, I'll be willing to up my offer, but not significantly, otherwise buying new makes more sense.

Supply and demand....it's still winter....come October and guys have entered the Argus...through charities etc...they'll be buying bikes like crazy.....then it's a sellers market.. ☺so now is the time to buy a roadbike at a good price....as it's still MTB weather...????

I think the market determines the price. A well priced bike sells within a week on the classifieds. If a seller has received no comments but lots of views within a week, the item is likely to be overpriced.Furher to this, certain bike brands seem to be more attractive in the second hand market.

Problem is guys get ripped off, paying 30k for a giant anthem alu.... Then when selling they think 25 is fair... A new one at a decwnt shop should be no more than 24

Agree with Vetseun. Market price rules. Unless of course you are a communist and think prices should be regulated. Some bikes retain their value better than others. Just like cars etc.

As a seller I believe in the following: If you're serious about selling the item take the new price and depending on how old and used the item is, start at 30 % depreciation. But also some seller's are adamant on their ridiculously high asking prices and upon receiving a reasonable offer they still don't entertain it despite having the item advertised for 4+ weeks.

Not quite the norm...

In some instances depending on the commodity, it very much depends on the time of the month you fun your advert!

People are more inclined to proactively shop with confidence if they have ammo at hand (normally around payday)

Have a look at some expensive complete bikes (well priced of course) sit until around the 25th... then all of a sudden sell irrespective of qty of views

Budgets I winter are tight as you spend more on basic expenses compared to summer

In summer your more inclined to spend as you want to go out & ride etc...

Pricing is one of which that every item has a prospective buyer at a price. How you price it is an unpredictable art as everyone has a perception of what their item is worth

Example: try so sell a road bike in winter, generally its a slow sell unless its a killer deal

These day you try to sell a MTB, you have for more interst & potential buyers as MTB is perceived a winter sport

Try that same road bike in summer, bobs your uncle &the focus shifts

As someone who just deals in 2nd hand preloved bikes, I have seen my fair deal of crazy prices. Yes you do get clueless sellers out there who sell a alloy for the same amount as a carbon bike or higher spec but I see very often where people put high prices on bikes because they have a emotional bond. But after a few weeks of the ad going cold they often realise this and drop the price to market related prices. In general though I have seen a trend over the last year where the price of 2nd hand bikes has increased but this also has to do with the price of new bikes going up. I always try to give my clients the best value for money and till date this has worked well for me. "Near new bikes at affordable price"

What gets to me is how the older bikes have suddenly jumped in value. I bought a Peugeot from a second hand shop for R350. I sold it about 10 years ago for R200. I've seen these advertised for R5000 now. I wish I had kept it.

I've seen emotion mentioned a few times.

This often clouds a sellers judgement on price.

Basic ecomomics of supply and demand often remedies this though ... that is if the person really wants to sell the item.
