Stripped internal threading

"Isn't that how the helicoil works?"

Well with a helicoil you actually need to enlarge the hole big enough to insert the helicoil which contains the required thread size.  That's why I ask will there be enough "meat" on that portion of the frame to accomodate a helicoil.  I imagine that the helicoil would need to be at least 8mm thick, although not sure if 8mm is thick enough to accomodate a 6mm thread.

the newly unthreaded hole is 6mm in diameter and the alu instert in the carbon frame is 9mm in diameter. It does seem the hole is then too small, but could a smaller helicoil not be inserted and then a smaller bolt used?

I've been told about inserting a helicoil into the stripped hole. anyone familiar with this?

I have a full set of helicoils and tools to insert. I can help you with that. PM me

If it is carbon, get a carbon repairer to fill it with resin, drill a hole and then tap new thread into it.

Or go the helicoil route.

My frame had/has little threaded inserts, these pop out and can be replaced with new ones when the thread stripped. Not sure if yours has that though.

If you bought the bike second hand and ask the orignial owner to do a warranty claim then yes it is fraud...

I don't have much knowledge about these things. Law etc. has never been a field of interest for me. I'll take your word for it.

On a not so entirely unrelated note, how does one change the thread title name?

You can look up M5 or M6 helicoil...whatever size the original bolt is. It will give specs for the size hole to be drilled out and the outer helicoil thread to be cut. Easiest is to phone any local engineering shop or engine rebuilder.

If the required hole will interfere with a threaded insert in a carbon frame then you may need another plan....eg replace the insert instead.

Regarding warranty I doubt it would

cover a stripped thread....that is not a manufacturing error unless the bike is new.

good luck finding a 7mm bolt. Non-standard. 6 & 8 are standard.

Any good engineering supply shop should have one. It is not standard, but not unavailable.

I repeat Helicoil is your best option, have done it for both Al and carbon frames and the carbon was for a seatpost clamp bolt integrated into the frame.... no issues and a quick and easy job by someone who knows what they are doing, so worth paying someone to do it
