Upper body protection - suggestions/advice please

I am off to race in the Alps for 6 days in about 3 weeks time at this event ...

http://trans-savoie.com/

Its billed as being more technically challenging than just about anything and on a par with the EWS. Its very steep and rocky in places and I foresee lost of opportunities for mishaps. I don't want to end up injured early on and have to battle on carrying wounds I could have avoided had I been wearing some chest and shoulder protection.

I already have  FF helmet, knee guards and elbow guards and my back pack does quite well as a back protector. I am thinking of a chest/back/shoulder protector. I see Alpine stars make a very enduro style jacket that even allows a bladder to be carried over the back protector. There are other 3df jackets from Leatt but these strike me as being a little more Moto than bike. I will have to pedal up about 1000 m a day in addition to the 4-5000 m descending so something that breathes a bit will be good...

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'd imagine others will be variations on the theme.

Here's a user review

That 7idp one looks the best and not as hot.

Been looking at getting a roost guard for a while now but not tempted enough. Maybe I need to fall harder than bruising ribs

that A-stars unit looks alrighty. The 7iDP user-review highlights an important annoyance: that tongue on the spine protector intefering with a helmet. But if I can cut it off without destroying the spinal protector,  i'd go 7 iDP.

The Leatt and A stars jacket are available locally dunno about the 7 job though...havent seen a hint of them online.

That roost tee might just be the answer with a back pack...

I lie -MX Alliance have the & idp jacket - pricey though at over R3k

i had an older Leatt roost jacket, and i really didnt like it. Maybe its my girth, but the straps wrapped around awkwardly, and the rib protection was laughable. Barely went around the front of my torso much less wrap around the sides. it was also small in size, that rib wrap around, so small in fact that if you bent over to the side, it would dig into the area above your hip. rational or not, I did not fancy crashing with that thing on. But things could have improved in more recent interations.

The  TLD torso guard was and is much better.

Ja, must say, with their elbow/knee guards the sizing is way off!!! But once I got the right size, they are comfy and sit well...  Yet to fall with them..

Murphy's Law... Fall most rides prior to having protection and not once since.

I like the idea of a back back/hydration pack with an intergrated chest protector. Maybe a zip one. Hopefully someone is taking note.

I think leat have somthing similar
