I think the best advise was given on the first page. Decide what kind of mountain cycling you want to do. Then decide what bike best suits your requirements. Don't be fooled into thinking that south Africa is an xcm exclusively country.

Gents, I see all these pics of 4x4's. Please tell me which bike is the equivalent to the FJ cruiser then I want that one

Nobody makes a bike that ugly.

You should be able to find an old stock 2014 or 2015 bike with decently nice (but not premium) components well within your price range.

I heard of new 2014 Anthems for around R18k and 2015 models around R25k to R30k depending

Try as many bikes as possible that fall within your budget.

There is never one answer to the question since value is relative. Giant anthem, giant trance, Scott genius are all great all rounders that each lean more into a specific spot that suits their character best.

Anthem tends toward marathon and xc

Trance tends toward all mountain enduro trail

Genius kind of sits across those types of riding intent

Erm... that would be the Santa Cruz Nomad and you won't get one inside your budget [emoji2]

I am new to the mtb game and just bought myself a Giant Trance 2 2014 (S) new for R19K - seems like Giant has small's left from 2014. Can't wait to shred the local trails with it.

DJR, are the bikes there to recover the Landy? :w00t:

......once upon a time I rode the Baviaanskloof on the bike and my wife used the Landy as my back up. Turned out she was too scared to drive the real gnarly bits, so, yes, I had to turn back twice to go recover her.  :D

Perhaps one of those fatboy bikes? All bubbly and you not sure why.
