Hacc Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 So how was everyone's Irene Race Yesterday? My plan was to just use this as a training run and to take it easy before OMTOM. It was seriously hot once again and it didn't help that the race started almost 20 minutes late. I thoroughly enjoyed the route, even though I started suffering from 30km onwards. I ran with the Asics Nimbus 19's.... HUGE mistake. I had all sorts of problems with the shoes. My feet felt very hot, my shins were sore (which I never experienced before) and after I finished, my feet was in pain (Also not something I am used to). I feel like throwing them away! Generally, I enjoyed the race.I made some friends on the route and I soon realized I just have to keep going no matter my time. I helped a guy to hold on and qualify and he stuck with me to the end. I really enjoy it if you can partner up with a stranger and you can help each other. I told him we don't walk in the last kilometer, and just before the last turn to the finish, he started walking. I shouted at him "No Walking", he just laughed and started running with me again. There are a couple of issues Irene can sort out:1. NEVER start a race late. It seems there was bad planning with cars coming in on the route where we were supposed to run2. There were lots of warm water at the water tables. I know you couldn't keep up with demand, but surely more hands on deck can help. 3. The medals were nothing special, it seems the exact same medal was given to the 21km and 48km (Not that medals matter to me, but for an ultra, I expect some sort of "special" medal) I will have to order Nimbus 18's today from Poobies before OMTOM. Edgar Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Training partner an I had set Irene Ultra as one of our big targets for Comrades Prep. Wanted to go sub 3h40 for an A seeding. With the balls up of the traffic at the start and then standing on the start line for probably 40 minutes, the head just wasn't in it. got running and slowly felt the drive again. at the turn around point we were on target but knew the real running was still come. Found a good rhythm up the drag and just continued from there. The heat from the turn around point just became oppressive. The section back through the school on the paving was torture. Running's version of the cobbles. Ended running 3h34 so goal achieved and felt okay at the end. Felt for the runners that were still running after 10:00 it was just so hot. Side note, the Adi Supernova's were perfect. Although if you have a wide foot you might battle as the toe box is not roomy. How was your Andrew? shaper, Andrew Steer, Hacc and 2 others 5

Really well done, you guys are on a different level I was never doing Irene, decided a while back it's two close to Two Oceans and also didn't like the idea of doing two Ultras and a Marathon in 5 weeks - especially on my low mileage training regime. I do though seem to have done myself a minor mischief, had my daughters birthday party on Sat at the Acrobranch in Melrose Arch, was buggering around with my youngest jumping off a high'ish platform holding her a couple dozen times and seem to have badly bruised the ball of my foot. It was a little sore at the time, but when I got out of bed yesterday to head off for my weekend run I couldn't even stand on it. I iced it plenty yesterday, and it's feeling a whole lot better already - will go for a little tester run this evening to see how it is - hoping it's just bruising - if it's a stress fracture or something stupid I will really be hating myself.

I think I might have also been tempted to go for it too! depends on how hilly it is though
Hacc Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 O, no Andrew, I hope it is nothing serious like my "brick episode". Try and keep off your foot and rest for a couple of days. Lexx and Andrew Steer 2
Barry Stuart Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Ugh, I bought a pair of Nimbus 19's two weeks ago. It feels very tight even running with it for two weeks now. I see some bad comments about it on the Comrades FB page as well. What type of problems do you experience with the shoes? Should I rather go back to 18? I just find them really rigid and unresponsive. They remind me of my Nike Pegasus from a few years back after they had done 1000km. Their much-hyped Flytefoam has done nothing for me. It's like they took a shoe that everyone loved for its comfort and plushness and tried to make it more performance oriented and now it does neither of those well. Andrew Steer 1
Barry Stuart Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 The Supernova Glide, or is there more than one "Supernova"? I'm going to test the Glide sometime, they feel very nice and are priced nicely. They are just kinda narrow, was my initial thoughts. It seems like it is going to be the Brooks Ghosts for me this year. Not impressed with the kms the Saucony Triumph ISO3 is heading for and I get a hot spot under my front foot with the longer kms, exactly there where the most wear is occurring from early days and not at the price they come at. So the next round will be Ghost Glycerin or Supernova Glides added to the Ghosts. Yeah, all the Adidas shoes seem to be a slightly narrow fit. My wife runs them about a size larger than her other shoes. Adidas dropped the Glide moniker from their Supernova range this season but most stores seem to be referring to it as the Supernova Glide 9.
Hacc Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 well done thats quite an easy A seeding - good choice of run - it equates to about 3:15 marathon. I think I might have also been tempted to go for it too! depends on how hilly it is though Don't know why they called it "flat and fast", I completely missed that.Total elevation of 385m (130m less than ODD and 2kms shorter) If you like rolling hills, then you will enjoy Irene. I think like ODD, the heat gets to you. Will be much more enjoyable if it was later in the year. Pretoria's heat is different to Johannesburg's.

Eish, hope it's nothing more than a slight bruise. Well done on the recent jump in mileage.
Hacc Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Any Ironman finishers in our midst?
