Steel vs carbon as an endurance road frame?

I have one steel hardtail and one titanium Hardtail.

I have ridden both over fair distances, obviously this is off road and not on the road. Both are supremely comfortable over distance and both have great compliance.

Can't believe I didn't spot this thread and take part earlier. Much of what I would've said has been mentioned by fellow steel enthusiasts.

All my bikes are steel frames (including the wife's). Not sure where you are based but you're welcome to meet and join me for a ride and take one or two for a spin... Get an actual reference to add to all the opinions.

Very kind of you to offer. Alas I'm in JHB..... but when the time comes, I will surely throw myself onto some locals for a tester!

I did spot this looker on Mellow Velo's FB page - forget function, the form looks gorgeous!

I would just like to highlight one point: the difference in ride quality of different frames is tiny compared to the difference between say a 23 mm tire and a 28 mm tire at appropriate pressures.

That's a good point about tyre size. Recently I fitted a 25mm gatorskin on the rear and left a 23mm on the front, both inflated to 8.5 bar, and for a while thought I had a rear puncture cos it felt so soft! Must try 28mm when I need to replace....

If they are both 8.5 bar the comfort should be the same. You can run the 25mm softer for more comfort or at the same pressure for less rolling resistance.

Am I the only one that likes white?

Need to dislike it before I complain about the dirt marks.

Mine has white bars on ;)

Had a white stem and saddle but swopped it onto another bike.

Have to admit, I've never understood the 'suspension' effect of tyre volume, presumably related to tyre width, and tyre pressure. I get the lower pressure bit, for the same tyre, but I can't get my head around why at the same pressure, a wider tyre doesn't give a greater suspension effect? The tyre volume and hence volume and mass of air in the tube is greater, so shouldn't that give a greater suspension effect? I'm trying to relate this to the volume of a damping pot?

Any mechanical engineers out there who remember vibration theory?
