Montagu Pass George, is it safe?

Tues & Wed I will be in George so would like to go for afternoon ride and the Wednesday an early morning ride.

 

Is it like Cape Town with the muggings? or am I 'reasonably' safe?

 

And of course, if anyone in George would like to ensure my safety, I would be happy to have some company.

You're safe there I rate. My old ballie did the pass yesterday with a group of mates.

There's apparently have been a few incidents of late involving cyclists being mugged in George but generally reasonably safe. I wouldn't say the pass is overly dangerous, it is quite lonely in the middle though. If you normally ride alone in rural areas then I don't see any reason not to go. Definitely to my knowledge not known as a hot spot or problematic, to be honest with you I don't have my ear to the ground, perhaps phone Ride for life or Coimbra the local lbs and ask them if they have heard of anything.

 

Can't do much riding at the moment but the pass is rather spectacular, witfontein is also nice, the trail fairies have been hard at work, especially the run from the top of the hill near the sentech tower all the way to the bottom.

Yeah it's safe, but how do they say, Safety in Numbers?

 

There was a couple of incidents there, but the guys was caught and sentenced to 15yrs in prison earlier this year.  Been up there a couple of times and encountered lots of single riders even as late as 19:00 at night still going up.  There is groups leaving from around 05:00 in the mornings also from the Engen carage by Virgin Active at the bottom that will be happy to accompany you up (they normally go up to Boshoff se Draai, which is halfway up)

I reckon my afternoon ride should be around 5pm depending on what time we knock off.

 

My morning ride, I will see if I can cat the 5am crew cos the I'm lodging close to that Engen.

I got dropped off in Herold and rode Montagu Pass to George. Absolutely stunning, this was around 5pm and got 4 other bikers coming from George side.

 

I obviously didn't do the climb but descended it. Would like to take that climb on tomorrow morning, but it will be dark so anyone doing it, give me a shout.

Left this morning at 5:30, did Montagu Pass and not a soul in sight. Enjoyed the Montagu Pass climb. By the time I headed back it was light and amazed not to find one bike on the route. I mean it is an absolute gem and with the good weather I would have thought that the George folks would be out riding

Sorry only seeing this now! We've got SO MANY riding options, Montagu pass is merely one of them, it is not a surprise that you only saw one other rider on the pass! Send us a pm next time you are in town and we will take you into the forest onto some single tracks!

Great stuff Oufy, I don't get to cycle that route during those hours but would assume that around 5pm - 7pm after work you will find more there. (most cycle only up to the Tollhouse or Boshoff se Draai) but as STC said, there is A LOT of cycling options in the area.
