This shock is exactly 3 years old now, and has been failing on me on a regular basis.

Does a shock have a "shelve life" ?  I just don't understand why it keeps on failing so regularly.

Every 2-3 months a seal kit is required.  It has "collapsed" completely last week, and needed to be send away to

the "specialists" for a "fix".

This is a 100mm version and use it for technical XC racing and marathons.  I do like to take drops +- 1 meter high but surely it should be able to handle it?

maybe replace it with a fox?

A few times yes.  At least 1-2 times per ride.  my weight is 74kg and running 140psi at the back, as I find that is a very good pressure for majority of my trail riding.

I would love a trail bike... "urgently"  but my bank manager (wife) does not approve another bike...  :(  Now I keep on smashing my poor XC bike.

Sounds like you either need some bottomless bands in there, or a bike with a ore progressive suspension curve.

That, or higher pressure / lower volume can.

Hence my questions and the suggestion of a trail bike as well

If you keep forking out cash on a shock that can't keep up (on a bike you'll eventually destroy) she won't be happy either. It makes financial sense to cut your losses, fix the bike up, sell it and get a trail bike. Once you have your new bike. Surprise her with a fancy dinner and some tender loving. Also please don't take any relationship advice from me.

My wife asked where her bike was and I stripped it to the bone. I'm running out of time and excuses.

Its a cannondale scalpel. If it is not the front fork that needs a service then the back shock failes on me. Awesome bike, but I realized I need something more rugged as well.

I had the same epiphany recently... It is a hard one to swallow, but you will be happier in the end. And so will your bike.

Haha, I don't dare touch anything on my wife's bike.

If it needs servicing I send it to a "professional". If I stripped it, she would throttle me.

Sell the Cannondale, and get a Giant Trance 29er. It might even end up putting cash into your pocket.

edit: some nice Specialized Cambers going cheap too.

(obviously all second hand bikes)

2nd edit: wheel size clarification.
