My steering feels "gritty"

Thought I'd quickly check with you guys in the know before I go through to my LBS.

Went for a ride last Thursday and it was really, really, really muddy after the big rains we had recently. Got home, washed the Anthem....I know I'm going to get crucified here but I had to use the WAP. I was standing about 2 - 3 meters back when going over the moving parts, but got in close on the frame etc.

This morning when I took my bike off the frame the steering was stuck. It came loose quite quickly, but then I noticed my steering felt "gritty" almost like there's sand in.

So I took the whole thing apart. I cleaned the steering column and inside of the frame's headset. Took out both steering bearings, took off the seals and re-greased them. I couldn't see anything wrong. Put it all back together, but still I felt that Gritty feeling in the steering.

I've had the bike now for about a year. It's been for a few services, I've had some wheel, rear suspension and crank bearings replaced, but I'm not sure if they ever serviced the steering system.

I checked the steering bearings and although it does feel like a new set could be coming this way in the near future, it did not feel like they had sand in them if you know what I mean.

Please assist and many thanks.

Also, is it dangerous to ride like this if I have to replace the bearings while I wait for them?

Headset bearings...moertoe

You typically can't service these bearings....they are consumables. Once they compromised they need to be replaced

TechTime with uncle Rouxtjie... :-)

Dankie Rouxtjie, looks like I'm digging into the kids' college fund again....whatever is left of it.

Can I go and ride like that this afternoon or should I check my life insurance first?

You never have to use the WAP, that's the end of the bearings for you I am afraid.

High power cleaning and bikes dont go together, lots of hot soapy water is all you need

Promise from now on...nannies.

I did bring half of the mountain home with me though, so the wap looked like the obvious choice.

You should be ok riding a few times if just feeling gritty ... I buy my bearings and do myself.. very quick job, and fairly cheap, think I paid R450 in total for bothe bearings.. If you tried to grease them yourself, im sure you can replace yourself..?

You can go and ride, it wont be life threatening...it just won't feel lekker. The sooner you can replace the better though.

WRT to the WAP, you can use it as long as you know where the bearings are and don't aim at the bearings.

WAP is great for cleaning the frame, rims, tyres, cassette(if you do it right) etc.

Use it just be carefull.

Can I get these sommer from Bearingman or am i going to get the overpriced bearings from the LBS?

Youare in for a shock, they're not available from bearing man. And aren't available separately. You'll have to buy a complete headset, just to get the bearings.

Hay Double J,

I wouldn't skimp on these bearings, for an extra few bucks get the better option. I get straight from my LBS, bearing man brings in cheaper Chinese from what I have been told, so bike specific option from your bike shop would be the way I go...

Good luck
