"cheap" new wheels or more expensive used wheels

Hi all

I went to my LBS this morning because there is a "gritty vibration" from my back wheel.

They said they are 90% sure it is the freebody that is the problem, and that it would need to be replaced (if they can find one) otherwise its a new hub.

Buying all the components and labor added makes it so expensive that I might be able to buy a new set of wheels.

(There is a dent on the front wheel brake surface as well.)

So now the question is, if i have to buy, do is it like bikes where you would rather buy a used and better, or is wheels something you do not gamble with?

I forgot to mention it is a road bike.....

Rules for buying 2nd hand are the same as for buying new.  Plenty of good double butted J bend spokes with even tension.  Laterally and radially true.  Smooth bearings (preferably sealed for mtb) and end caps/axles in good nick.

That said all too often wheels hit the second hand market when they start giving problems, so if you are not confident in your abilities to case them out rather go for new.

Thanks. Just got news from CWC, my freebody is done.

Because of the specific brand it is next to impossible to get a new freebody. So will have to get a new wheelset, or have a back wheel build.

I am now considering going the SS direction.

Does anyone know where I can find a SS back wheel, cogs and chain? Or at least prices in SA??

I have bought second hand pair of Mavic RSYS and still is using them after 3 years. Mostly for racing. Only had to replace a carbon spoke for which the wheel had to be send to Mavic itself. Oja..bought it for R3000 retails now for over +15000

I recently bought my mom a set of Shimano wheels from CWC for R8500.  She kept complaining of a wobble in the front wheel at high speeds when braking. Had the wheel trued, new tube, new tyre but no improvement - the actual rim was unevenly weighted giving it a weird hop like movement at speed.

Took it back to CWC after a month - they replaced it same day. I was very grateful I had purchased new.

So it will come  down to "gamble" or new.

Can something break and cause me to fall if I keep on riding like that till the ZARs is a bit more in my bank account?
