Park Tools sells the Blue Book which is a generic manual for all things bicycle. Many manufacturers have videos and workshop manuals on their websites.

I prefer getting the info from source than from some guy in his garage with a video camera who may not use proper technique.

Downside of the factory manuals is they usually refer to a lot of special tools that the home mechie can't get or can't afford....but they often have pics and these allow you to devise an equivalent method from common tools a lot of the time.

Some special tools are just essential though.

Good luck.

I wouldn't be able to afford cycling if I had to rely on shops to service and maintain my bikes. Built up tools over the years. Happy to take on most tasks. Build many a bike from scratch. On my bucket list: To build a wheel from scratch. But that's an art!! YouTube can't help with that. It's like watching Clapton playing the guitar on YouTube and then trying it yourself!!

But I love working on my bikes. There is a lot to be said for maintaining your prized possession.

Learn and enjoy!! Have lots of patience.

Two Sunday's back we were a couple of guys who did a course with Marnitz from CWC at their premises. Best R500 I have spend in a very long time! Course took about +4 hours.

I can now remove my own crankset, clean and lube. Remove cassette and freebody. Set gears, remove chains etc.

Get the Park Tool's "Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair" - it deals with everything - systematically - it really is the bible of bicycle repair. Tells you step by step what to do, with pictures - and deals with all the differences between brands. Great investment.

Does he have a regular class, how can I get hold of him to book such a class?

R500 is definitely a good price if your not mechanically inclined and want someone to show you basic's. Books can help a lot of different problems and will never be a waste. You tube does help but as said somewhere else on forum always to be taken with a healthy dose of common sense.

Fork service is not that difficult just use the manual provided by manufacturer. There is a post about the oils and replacements that can be used.

For the once off things like Pressing headset cups I use LBS its just a bit easier and they don't usually charge enough to warrant me making a tool.

For items I use often ill try making/buying best tool I can.

Park tool is expensive but worth it. (Wish i could afford them)

You unfortunately need to have the correct tools, else you battle and might just make matters worse.

Successfully removed and fit new BB30 yesterday. Took me all of 10 minutes because I have the tools needed for the job.

As we know, tools are very expensive - http://www.capemulti.co.za/ONLINESHOP/ONPROMOTION/tabid/5107/List/0/Default.aspx?SortField=ProductName%2cProductName&txtSearch=park+tools

The next best thing to riding my bikes is mucking around servicing, repairing and just trying out things on them ..... might be just me though!

Agree nsbb, nothing as lekker as making something work properly again.
