To go 1 x10 or not to go 1 x 10

For me it's as follows. I ride a 27.5 bik w 3x10. Majority o o time is is in middle an big due to the way I prefer to ride. However, like on piket-bo-berg event I spent a lot o time . . Granny after cramping (this this this 63km).

On Baviaans on the flats I I saw bigblade. And now m other theory, I is easier t pedal a gear that is the same ratio through bigger chainrings than through smaller chainrings. For example it will be easier to pedal 42 and 21 than I will be 32 a 16.

I did all the calculations today. I have a 2x10. I do not want to lower my top speed. I get there quite often

Allot of the trials i ride i need the high gear for the climb. I am happy with my current ratio spread and do not wNt to sacrifice top or bottom ratios. The fact is there is no 10 speed casette which will not hamper the ratio spread. My 2 cents worth. Untill i can afford the 1x11 i will stay on the 2x10

I am happy with 2x10 and love my 1x1 also .Praxxis casette 1x10 will be my option if i go that route .Currently i would ride the 3x10 until it needs replacing .Build yourself Single speed .It is great fun and makes you stronger ,fitter and a better rider. In our group of friends ,only one person has gone 1x11 and he cannot keep up on the flat sections .I still like my high and low ends and use them often .Must add i weigh 100kg

Thanks for all the comments guys.

What I have decided to do is run my current setup until it needs replacing. While saving a bit here and there and then will either got the 1 x 10 praxxis route or the 1 x 11 xt route ( maybe prices will be down by then ) I have dropped 15 kgs and currently on about 95 kgs and am getting fitter and faster. Will spend majority of my time in the middle chainring to see how it feels and to build up some strength.

Thanks again for the input!

Took the 1x11 for it's first ride yesterday at Modders.

The 32 up front worked really well at any speed under 50 km/h.

The ratios just seems right compared to 1x10. I was able to keep my legs spinning at a good RPM no matter what the terrain. Shifting is precise, quick and easy even with clutch engaged. Shimano really do things well

Managed PB on the 41km red route and on my favorite segment- the river section.

Moving from an XT 2x10 to XRT 1x11 knocked 500g off the bike! Might be another reason why I was flying...

Definitely worth a look if you upgrading.

Thanks to Darryl at BSC for the supply, fitting and perfect setup!

More ground clearance? how, did you shorten the crank arms?

It's hard to describe but a 34 is significantly smaller that a 42 so while the difference may seem small it translates to being able to roll over much bigger stuff without worrying about catching the crank. Makes no difference if you're pedaling but if necessary on an uphill you can ratchet your pedals and on downhills I definitely notice the difference.

Perhaps the confusion comes about when you say ''catching the crank', maybe you mean 'catching the chainring' ..... #eksemaarnet

To have the best of both worlds I would suggest you:

  • 2x11 (11x40 cassette and 36/26 chain ring)
  • Sell the 3x10

Good luck with your decision.

i agree with this guy

My terminology was incorrect. I talk about the crank as inclusive of chain ring and crank arms.

I didn't read any of the previous posts so feel free to throw tomatoes.

First ride it before you buy it.   I have 1x11, can hold my own on the climbs but get pissed off when the 36/38T riders pull away from me on long descents and flats so I'm thinking of going 2x11

I know this is not what you guys want to hear but in my, albeit limited, experience getting the shifting right with these mixed together cassettes is a bind ....

I would really like to be shown in practice that it can be done and not in some ideal situation with brand new everything and specific setups but keeping in mind many are trying to do this with limited budgets and trying to re-use as much as they can ....

My best setup is maar still with a NW chainring, normal 11-36 cassette and clutch RD. never gives me any grief besides my legs perhaps. Again despite all the heroes around I find that in specific situations it isn't enough (case in point sharp short ups where you have no run up)

OK so today I decided to give this a proper go again .... I tried before with an XT 11-36 cassette and an e-thirteen 42 range extender. I replaced 15/17 with some arbitrary 16 I found lying around in a box at my LBS but the shift ramp was in the wrong place and caused me no end of trouble .....

Today I bought a 'proper' 16 from Kiwi here on the hub (Rapide), shifts like an absolute champ!

Got some advice on setting up the RD (XT clutch) and also chain length from Myles Mayhew (he knows what he's talking about!).

So essentially have gone from a 32*11-36 to a 34*11-42, suburb test worked fine but will have a proper test at Thaba tomorrow and report back. We'll see what Strava says [emoji12]

Looking for some advice:

What do you think is the better option:

1 - Rapide cog extender on a xt cassette (with a 16t as well) - 11-40/42

2 - Praxis 11-40 wide range cassette.

I've got a standard 11-36 xt cassette (still in the box), so trying to decide which option to go for...
