To go 1 x10 or not to go 1 x 10

''HiJack On"

So i went 1 X 10 on a new build - 10 spd 11 - 36 converted to 11 - 42 with the 16 filler. I'm using a X9 RD long cage, running a 34 NW oval on the front. All from KALBO.

So here's the problem - It changes up perfect all the way to the 42, but when I try drop off the 42 the RD doesn't pull the chain off the 42 onto the 36. The top jockey pulley just runs up against the 42

I've replaced the B screw for a longer one which is in at the max.

The chain ring is mounted in the same position as the middle ring on the front with 2mm spacers moving it closer to the frame, this to improve the chainline a bit -

Anyone else experienced this or have a remedy ?

Would the spacers be contributing ?

"HiJack off"

I have the X9 Medium Cage Clutch RD, which I read should only handle 40t, not 42t.

I have done the 11-40 conversion using the Kalbo kit and it is working fine. The 42t may be two teeth too far.

relevant or not my 10 spd  XTR clutch type RD works fine with a 42 but its not slick as would be expected of XTR but it does work.

Agree on slickness, my XT clutch rear derailer is much smoother with the clutch off. I have a 32 T nw chainring, so if I leave the clutch off, will I drop my chain more easily or not?

Every time someone says you need a clutch for a 1x setup a trail fairy dies.

A decent NW ring upfront and correct chain length should keep the chain from dropping. The clutch is a nicety, not a necessity.

I'm running a sram x9 non clutch derailleur on my stumpjumper fsr, I've yet to drop a chain. This includes 500km of riding since the conversion and all sorts of rough stuff like stairs, drop offs, jumps, hakahana and more.

I'm amazed at how well the kalbo nw chain ring works at holding onto the chain.

When my 1 by setup went from a Sram RD to XT I found it really stiff with the clutch on. Didn't like it at all. But I found out you can adjust the tension of the clutch. Reduce the clutch tension a bit and it makes shifting much easier and smoother.

Hi guys, need some advice.

Im currently running a 1x10 set up, up front I have a 36t 104bcd kitted chain ring on a normal shimano crank. What I would like to know is, do I need the spacers in front?

I can hear the chain taking strain when Im on my one up. I've tried 2mm washers as spacers but when installed the chain ring rubs against my frame.

Hey dude. I didn't need spacers on mine it was pretty plug, torque and play. . I'm sure I've read about dudes adding a spacer on the drive side of the BB to better chain line. Is this what you mean?

A longer B screw maybe as mine is in the whole way?

This morning I had one heck of a creaking sound, more so when peddling, came home looked for the problem and found that the chain was very dry, lubed it and the noise is gone.

I use the Kalbo 32T nw oval with 16T replacement for the 15 and 17T and I have the 42T expansion since I suck at climbing. And I really enjoy the conversion a lot.

To be honest I was rather disappointed with the 1X hype, I tried the oval 32 upfront with Kalbo setup rear on 10 spd.

the only thing I liked was the clean look when you look down. the weight saving ended up about 250-300grams

the inconvenience was way more, the fast pedaling action on the flats seemed to tire me out, the big gear jump from 16 down to 12 is uncomfortable and you seem to lose rythym. the 2x guys just blow you out on the flats

the chain sound doesn't sound so healthy if you are changing up and down from 36-42 and back ( I was warned about this by my techie)

I think its a great system for proper XC racing or the wannabe pro's, its an expensive system that cant match a good 2x 10/11 system

I am trying the 2x10 but with the 24/34 and standard 36-11 it gives that slight bit better climbing from a 26 and makes running 34 on the 36 rear smoother... I think

if 1x takes off though it could change bike construction because of removal of the FD function as seen on the Yeti and others

Did the Fast One this passed Sunday with a 34*11-42 and as per the name there was some serious hustling at times but I had no problems at all. Never felt like I needed a bigger gear and I would suspect by the results that there were quite a few 2* and 3* riders behind me and I'm sure some ahead of me but I like it and not sorry I made the change [emoji41]

Just an observation ..... Changed my long cage XTR non clutch RD on my 1*10 Rush for a medium cage XT RD with clutch, man never realized how noisy the non clutch thing was [emoji15]- not quite like a church mouse but damn there is so much less clattering going on!

That however is the only real improvement for me as I never dropped a chain on the non clutch .... Well besides almost being part of the cool kids club [emoji57]

As Myles also pointed out.............ummm.....

I have been running 1x10 for over 3 years now already - I actually find a MTB to be weird with a FD now. (1x10 or 1x11 - I dont one needs more, maybe if you are a podium seeker yes)
