Thanks Swiss

I am busy reading up some papers of his.

Have not thought about the saddle because I can sit on it for days with no problems.  Would hate that to change but sure, no harm in experimenting.

Thanks again.

No shims available in Durban.  Tried 5 bike shops!  One of the biggest and oldest shop did not even know they even existed or what they were.

This is exactly why CRC gets my vote every time.

Yeah i had the same issue here in switz when i was looking for shims.

I ended up ordering shims from Steve Hogg a few years ago when i was trying to solve a particular issue i had, found his service to be very good and he gave me a lot of good advice (for free) regarding a leg length / lower back issue.

I had a mild form of polio when I was a baby.

As a result my right leg is shorter and thinner by nearly 5 cm.

When I started cycling the set up was a problem if my saddle height was set right for either leg.

Too high and my right knee hurt. Too low and my left quad would cramp.

Now I ride at an in between height without any problems.

Have been in contact with Steve.  Great hive of information.

I have made three standard 3 bolt shims 5mm from nylon and will be giving them a try out.

Not sure what to expect.  Steve said he would be getting back to me.

If I can increase efficiency 10% I will be happy.  Any improvement is a bonus.

Interesting Case

Some points to consider

  • Bio will not help you, its not a strength issue.
  • a 2,5 cm LL is a big mechanical issue. Its going to cause an "Upslip' on your pelvis on one side. This will tension your neural system. Neural tension is one of the most under diagnosed problems around. You need to see a good physio with knowledge of cycling mechanics and preferably OMT qualified. You need some good treatment and some neural stretches
  • Shimming you cleat is in my view the bestanswer. You need to correct for the mechanical problems otherwise you will always bob sideways on your bike. Dr Jerone Swart is def the best person to advise you. Might be worth a trip to CT to let him do it.
  • Don't think that you would be able to get a shim for 2,5cm. I would start by correcting it by half that amount. That is still gonna create and issue with the mechanics of the shoe.

Good luck!

Maybe go speak to Darryl Grobbelaar.  He is probably the top orthotists and prosthetist in KZN.  He has helped a buddy of mine who had polio as a kid by building up his shoes from the inside to make up for his shorter and weaker right leg.

Worth a shot.

Thanks for the input Physio I agree 100% and a Bio will certainly not help me.  I have a given - A  mechanical difference of 25mm in one leg - MRI checked.  Don't know if all the stretching etc is a good idea???? may pull a muscle on the other side.  Just have to accept what I have and do the best I reckon.

Busy making shims and I agree, only doing 10mm with an option of another 2mm.  This will be better than it was.  I am then going for another bike fit.

After that, going on a moer of a long ride to test the body.

I think I am sorted now. Thanks for input guys.  At my age there is not much you can do so any little bit of help is welcome and taken in every which way.

agree with the shim solution. I have a 2cm ll discrepancy and the shim has reduced it by only a fraction but it has made a substantial difference to my comfort on the bike.

Was at his door originally.  My plight started there with inserts.

Thanks Dazshell

Have you troed a shorter crank arm on the left?  I am sure a bike shop will help you out with a loan.  If it works, you're gonna buy it!  Try Neil at Cycle Specialists.

As a matter of interest, how old are you?
