Been cycling mtb for almost a year and looking at getting a dual sus. Got a Momsen Al soft at the moment. Very happy with the bike.

I can get it a giant athem x advanced 2014 model for 37 000. Sounds like a good deal. I also like the Momsen Vipa Ac or Scott 930. Any comments ?

okay okay okay....hijack on

Seeing as I am in the same-ish predicament as the OP, my 5 cents worth...

I am currently pondering a full-sus, and the new Anthem X 29er is at the top of the pile. Now, I know how everyone seems to be getting a stiffie whenever the word Anthem is mentioned, and from what I have discovered, with good reason.

My predicament is this. I am a big oke. Think 1.90m, 110kg. I like riding trails more than gravel roads, I like (love) hitting anything which remotely looks like a berm or a jump or a rock garden or a drop-off etc. etc. You get the point. Currently, I am repairing my rear wheel after just about every ride, seeing as I ride a Bergamont revox 5.3 HT, which is very entry level for what I expect it to do.

my LBS has advised me to rather look at the Spez Camber Comp 29er, seeing as according to them this bike will handle everything I throw at it, and best suits my riding style. How would the Anthem compare?

In a nutshell, you'd be better off with a Camber.

As an example, my business partner (who like me has also been riding for 20+ years) recently switched from an Anthem Advanced 1 to a Camber (albeit the Expert Carbon). He also weighs around 100kg and is an experienced technical rider. In his words "it's amazing how much more stable and planted the Camber is".

The Anthem is a great bike, but for your riding style the Camber is where it's at.

I recently took a 2016 Camber S-Works out for a long ride (I currently ride an Enduro) and was blown away but how balanced and agile it was. Yes, it's not directly comparable to the Comp Carbon, but the 2016 Cambers really are properly sorted bikes in the geometry department.

What LBS is that? Seem to know their bikes. Ridden both, albeit over a short time, and IMO the camber is more lively. Didn't like the first gen Camber, but the latest one could be a great all rounder.

Sounds like you're the perfect candidate for the AnthemSX. Essentially an anthem with a 120mm fork on teh front.

But yes, Martin is right. Camber would be more suited to your style than the garden variety Anthem (Non SX variety)

I'd even go so far as to recommend the Stumpy or a Trance.

Just a Q ? What about cost of service for Specialized ?

I spoke to a service guy and he was saying that the Specialized is expensive to service ?

Cycle's Direct in Cape Town. They do know their stuff, and are a great bunch of okes. Very helpful. They are Spez and Giant agents.

I was recently in the same boat and had the opportunity to demo both the Giant and the Scott 930 for a few days. The Giant is a great bike and made sense on paper. There was just something about the Scott - I enjoyed it a lot more. Prefered the ride position, it handled better and it climbed a lot better than the Giant, I mean a lot! Just finished the Karoo2Coast on the Scott and I could not be more happy with my purchase. One of my riding buddies bought one as well and also loves it.

If you can, go ride both and decide. It would be foolish to make such an important purchase without trying a few bikes first. I thought there was a big difference between the two and prefered the Scott by far.
