Cracked carbon????

If your LBS won't replace. Sand off the paint at the cracked area to see if it's just the paint or take it to a guy that works with carbon

As what most people are saying. Take it in to a company who works with repairing of carbon.  If you just got the frame I would say its a paint or bonding crack which lots of bikes get as the frame settles into place but usually its only hairline, this is much more visible. After having a frame for that long already I would say its a crack unfortunately.

Paint don't just crack like thats for no reason. Can assure you there will be an underlying crack beneath the paint

Nothing more to see here, Bogus has spoken, it will be like he says.

Some specials carbon repairers can perform a carbon x-ray. Probably a better idea than a LBS. Not sure who to recommend though? Maybe Pro Cycles in Benoni... Hubbers, any recommendations?

  • 3 weeks later...

Update so far: by way of info sharing.....

1. The original vendor and several local bike shops all thought paint-crack.

2. BogusOne via PM said carbon-crack.....no doubt.

3. As Bogus is in CT and I in JHB, I took the frame to a local JHB-based carbon repair specialist. Within seconds of inspecting he agreed with BogusOne. This was confirmed by sanding off the paint (see photo below).

4. A warranty claim was made to the manufacturer and approved without any complaint within 3 days. I'm just waiting for the new 2016 models to land and then I should have a new frame by end of November!

Lessons learned so far:

1. Listen to BogusOne! (Many thanks to Bogus for the PM advice and support).

2. Stay with your gut - I couldn't convince myself that a 2 yr old bike can develop a paint crack without having a carbon problem.

3. Register your new bike on the manufacturer's warranty website - I did back in 2013 and believed it sped things up.

4. For those in JHB, who are looking for a referral, Cobus Buma (082 880 9600). He's in Douglasdale and seemingly Cyclelab Fourways use him regularly. I found him to be knowledgeable and hugely accommodating.

Many thanks to all who commented - much appreciated!
