My second XT chain within this time is just about shot?? 500kms on a chain, is this normal? I've never had to change my 2x10 chain this often Riding conditions are normal, no mud, local Tygerberg MTB trails, regular proper cleaning and lubing.. Are there 11speed chains that perform better ito durability? At R450-R550 a chain, R6000 a year gets a bit rough! >_<

Spoke101 Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Shimano chains are $h!t. SRAM are better, should get a 1/3rd more distance. First prize is KMC not cheap but worth it. They do a cheap 11spd chain for ±R360 I haven't got feedback yet so can't comment but all there others are bomb proof.

Wear is caused by friction due to no or little lube or grinding in dirt. Chains don't stretch. My 2c Google the Sheldon brown article on chains and lube

Skylark Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 11 speed chains do apparently wear the fastest of all the chains, all other things being equal, less pin and roller surface to spread the load/wear so they wear quicker. 1x9 for the win!
