Hi guys, this topic may be answered, but cant find it, so here goes.

Will a 10 speed clutch (SLX/DEORE) rear derailleur compatible with a 9 speed cassette? As far as I know you can just play arround with the screws and limit the way up and down? I heard some of the 9speed derailleurs was used for 8speeds many moons ago.

I just want to make sure ot will fit, my brain say it will fit....

It all depends on the arc....

It can be done but not with all mixed/matched types. I have set up both Shimano and SRAM 10 speed stuff on 9 speed cassettes (and vice versa actually) and worked perfectly. The Zee definitely works for both.

10sp Shadow Plus works on 9sp SRAM shifters and a 9sp cassette with some modification. There's a thread on it somewhere, but basically you've got to put a 6mm spacer under the cable fixing. I'm using it on my bike at the moment and it works great.

9 and 10sp Shimano are not compatible.

As droo and other experts have said you will drive yourself to drink trying to get a 10sp RD adjusted to shift properly on a 9sp groupset..... I know I've been there, not on purpose though [emoji45]

OK, sorry to ask what might be a stupid question:

If your 10 speed rear derailleur is activated by a 9 speed shifter, it will move the exact distance it need to move for each shift on a 9 speed cassette. End stops can be adjusted to limit movement on outer cogs, not so? The chains are slightly different in width so you might (but I doubt it) have to put different jockey wheels on. Are the cage on the 10 speed derailleur so much narrower than a 9 speed one that the wider chain will not run through freely (I doubt that too)?

Explain to me why it cannot work.

the new rear mechs have a different leverage so for the same amount of cable pull a 10 speed mech will move less than an old 9 speed one.

As I said that was my real life not guessing experience but use it don't use that is up to you ........

Thanks, now it starts to make sense. I never considered the leverage ratio of the derailleur itself. Thinking too much "shifters only", in the box!
