Baviaanskloof - Platform Bikerack friendly?

Hi guys,

I would just like to find out from those who have travelled through the Baviaanskloof with a platform bikerack on a SUV.

There isn't a reason why you should have issues with the rack scraping or being too long on sharp turns hey?

I have gone through the kloof on my bicycle many times and once with the bikes on a 'hanging' type rack and can't think that it would be an issue with a platform?

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated?

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm also thinking that I should be ok. Ground clearance on my Forrester is a bit less than the Fortuner but I also reckon I'll be ok.

I would be very careful with this type of rack through the section that belongs to nature conservation. The rest of the kloof should be fine. Those racks are very low and especially the 3 bike ones stick out quite far and get scraped easily when going through a deep dip or ditch. I would go very slowly through the rough bits and at every deepish ditch I would have someone watch and tell me if it is about to damage something. Worst case is that you may have to remove the bikes and rack once or twice and re-fit 20 metres further on. It's a lovely place, do make sure to ride some of it on your bike as well. Especially the nature conservation part.

The last time I went through there I had the bikes on the roof and it was a bit tricky in some parts to avoid overhanging trees.

Hi DJR,

Thanks for the feedback and opinion. I've ridden the Trans for the past 6 years and have been there on holiday before so have spent some quality time on the bike. It is a special place as you say, the plan is to head through there on our way from PE to Cape Town for a lekker roadtrip December.

It is a 3 bike rack and as you say may scrape on the very rough sections. I just do not want it to be more of a hassle with checking now and again which will steal some joy of the trip. Maybe I should try and go the hanging bike route for the trip...

Hopefully there are some Hubbers who have gone through with a similar setup.

That pic looks awesome!

I have been through a few years ago in a Forester with a bike rack but the hanging type. No real problems but slow in the rough sections and river crossings.

My previous trip with my previous Forester was also on a hanging rack, have since moved to platform one though.

I will try this question again once the 'Scammed by a Hubber' thread cools down   :w00t:

Where is the "Scammed by Hubber" thread now? Cannot find it............

Took a 29 on the back of a Koleos through the Baviaans with no problem.  Should have removed the wheels because they were pitted with stone chips though.  Careful how the bike lies in accordance with your exhaust pipe.

Haven't read all the posts so I hope I did not repeat what somebody already said.

I presume it was also a 'hanging' type rack if you mention removal of wheels? Have had no problem with the hanging type, just worried that the platform one I have now is a bit too low.

Roads are really washed away at the moment - went thru after K2C. The campsite manager told us a landy went over the edge few days before we did it. I honestly wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks, will check with Parks closer to the time. Have driven it in fairly bad conditions before and I am very careful.

Main question is the suitability of a platform rack through there.

Monday morning bump, anybody been through with a platform rack? Your experience?

I'm starting to lean towards rather using a 'hanging type' rack to minimize hassle.
