Hey guys, my point was not about homeopaths, it was about EATING THE RIGHT food and ...plse follow your own heart. It works for me, I'm not here to convince you...but we can open that debate under another topic if you want :)

and on that topic:

"Processed meat ranks alongside smoking as major cause of cancer, World Health Organisation says"

You are 100% correct that diet is substantially more important than exercise.

However, mentioning homeopathy in any sentence tends to throw a massive question mark on any other statement, even if perfectly valid. :)

The mediators (cytokines, chemokines, CAMs, etc) are significantly different, leading to different humoral and cellular mediated responses.  The outcomes of these will affect the body very differently.  (Relatively) frequent bouts of exercise or other stressor is not a continuous condition, and probably leads to increased protection (repeated bout effect) through various mechanisms.

Take your point but still feel comfortable that there is a causal relationship. We see permanent damage in heart muscle in these individuals. Surely inflammation played a role.

I did extend it to MS though. Will dig into the literature a bit.

My take is is you train and increase your FTP  by concentrating on ensuring your base is very good then, add the building blocks ontop of a good base fitness on the bike will not be detrimental to your health. But if you doing Vo2 max efforts all the tinme without a good base then sure you will put strain on your body. The key is to either building slowly or decrease to rest (taper), In Today's Plan it a growth of your CTL week on week ensuring the load is not too massive from each week.

Point is watch your CTL and ensure you build a good base before just racing every weekend.

check out www.todaysplan.co.za to build yourself a base - endurance training plan ensuring you don't cook yourself.

I have been uneasy about this for a while now. The fact that I am not a very fast cyclist doesn't mean I am not going very hard. I am missing part of one lung (army days) and I think it also makes me less effective as a cyclist but I often ave above 90% for races. I have been at 92% for more than 5h several times. Last year I went flat out to hang onto the front of AL up Hekpoort and REALLY thought I was going to die - chest pain and all. This year I could not sleep the night before due to anxiousness (I went up a minute quicker).

My father is 75y and ran ultras competitively for 35 years. No problem - so my genes should be reasonable (50% of it at least). Still I have some lingering doubts. I have been telling people for years that the benefits of running outweighs the negatives by far (I still do) but I have to admit that I suspect it does affect your knees negatively in the long run. What if cycling/suffering scars the heart?

I will be following with more than just a passing interest.

I wish these quacks would make up their minds, people have been doing endurance exercises (marathons etc) decades and decades... and the quacks have been studying them for decades and decades AND NOW..(drum roll) it might be bad for us....

Lets face it, life is bad for humans

At 51 i do prefer the idea of doing short hi intensity exercise (a few laps around the preverbal block) and then retire to the couch to watch the laatjies tour de france......

The difference now is that the people that have trained for longer are not only the genetically gifted anymore. Also the numbers are bigger (better statistics).

I heard about this thing called dihydrogen monoxide... Cyclists have been filling their bottles with it. Apparently can kill you if you drink too much of it!? Falls from the sky as well? Wtf?
