In the good old days, quick release links were unheard of, so breaking links with a chain break and reassembling it was the only way to do it. If you did it correct, it should be fine.

 

6/7/8 speed chains are fine, but 9 and up have peened rivets which destroy the rivet and sideplate when you break the chain.

 

Ride it like that if you insist, but I predict a meeting between your stem and your gonads at some point in the not too distant future.

Just buy the pliers. They make like 10x easier!

 

And as for pushing links back in... nothing wrong with that (provided you do it properly).

 

How do you think Shimano expects you to join your chain. They don't supply/believe in quick links, unlike the SRAM and KMC chains.

Thanks for all the inputs. Amazed everytime at the knowledge here - many questions still to come from me. Seems like next up for purchase is two quick links and possibly those little pliers.

 

Im gonna have to land more clients to afford this here new hobby of mine. Or i should just stop buying alcohol and pizza. But the stallion needs to roll...

I wouldn't put it quite as bluntly as David but for the price of a quicklink is it worth the uncertainty? I would just go buy 2, replace the now 'compromised' one and carry one in your pocket (that way you'll anyway never break a chain and have one to help some other helpless person that Rouxtjie has passed by :ph34r:  )

Oh and that thing about no tools required... don't believe them. Just get the pliers. You can thank me later :lol:

 

 No tools for installation ... removal is a different story.! LOL

I use a small piece of gear cable and two pairs of pliers, a quick tug and the quicklink opens....

Ja, but you don't realise that you 'need' the pliers until you've used them. A faff becomes a 2 second operation.

Sure, but if you don't have them this works! Any idea why you can do a 9 speed one by hand though?

I buy the links on eBay, they are very cheap, like R15 each. To remove them I squeeze with a tool like this one on diagonally opposite corners, it pops the link easily. I reuse my links, have not had any issues with this.

Tried this, mine wouldn't budge. My previous KMC chain's quick link came off easily, allowing me to remove the chain completely and clean it proper. since I replaced it, the new one's link won't move.

^This, you really need them.

I have used many tricks in the past and done a lot of swearing. The last time I had a stuck one I went and got a pair of the pliers and now removing those links couldnt be easier.

There are 101 McGuyver ways of getting these links off and on. The tool is the best of them all. Get the tool and thank patches later.

 

Never sorry I bought THE TOOL. Don't think twice now of cleaning my chain and cluster. It's just a cinch.
