If entry cost wasn't enough of a barrier to participation at events, then these surveys surely will be.!   (not that I've looked at it yet)

How about some mass action.?

yep.. lets all say YES to all the questions .. and then YES to all the sub questions ...

lets face it... most of us is not doing much at work these last few days ... so we might as well complete the non secure compulsory medical questionnaire  ....

That is if i can log in again to change all my answers to YES .... lol

think they will notice something if a 13 year old say YES to everything .... (i have to compete one for my son as well)

I received a mail saying that I must please ensure I enter my name the same way as I did when registering for the event, Which I am doing, It STILL tells me "Nobody found matching this criteria"..

I give up, I am no going to do the questionnaire anymore. If CTCC Admin wants to ban me from the race then fine, I will however request a FULL refund.

SIte back working again.

Massively inrtrusive Qs. Not prepared to give up my annual fun ride by not filling it out, but also not willing to give out any of that kind of information. Takes about 30s to click through No to every question.

Definite data harvesting here - and I have zero trust that the response to the final Q will be honoured (whether you consent for the data to be used for research).

My reply to David Bellairs response to my post. Read from the bottom up:

Hi David,

Thanks for the mail.

I do apologise if you find my tone offensive, however I must admit that the way that this survey has been conducted and operated is probably what lead to me becoming offensive in the first place.

Let me explain

WRT your statements below I would not necessarily agree with you wrt the POPI act and familiarity with it, in that the way the survey was published on an insecure link and with confidential information was allowed out on unencrypted links and captured on unsecured sites, you have already infringed POPI and possibly other acts which govern medical research. I would have assumed that prior to sending out such links, you had tested them and at least ensured that you had done due diligence which would have shown these problems up immediately. This is really a basic requirement, and as an organiser of such a large event it is surprising that this was neglected. You as the organiser are asking the participants to entrust you with highly confidential information, yet you did not do the basics to ensure that information was protected.

From that point onwards you have already betrayed the trust and your survey, no matter what you subsequently did, was doomed.

Secondly wrt the content of the survey, some of the questions are illogical and are difficult to answer. Again I am not sure this was tested before being published – were guidelines to what was being requested put next to the questions? Have you tried to complete this questionnaire yourself – and to what result? I am pretty much sure that again – this was not tested.

As evidence of this I suggest you go and look at the multiple cycling forums where this has been pointed out. If the average person struggles to answer these questions, but has to complete the survey to get an entry, you are pretty much certain that the answers you receive will not be truthful. This will mean your research is of no value whatsoever.

As a constructive suggestion going forward could I possibly suggest that you make participation voluntary, to a relevant sample size,  and that you make the goals transparent. That way people would willingly volunteer information – this has been proved many times over in the past.

Finally I suggest you test your survey multiple times on multiple different links prior to publishing. Having the users one of South Africa’s largest ISP’s (Vodacom) unable to access the survey , was again, really avoidable.

You run a massive event – one of the largest in the world I am lead to believe. Should the way that the entrants experience is managed not be world class?

Regards

Paul Ruinaard

Hi Paul

Thank you for your mail the contents of which I note. Your insinuation regarding the POPI act and our knowledge thereof is terribly misplaced. We go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that data storage and data usage is done strictly in accordance with POPI.

We have a reputation here at the Cycle Tour of which we are particularly proud when it comes to ensuring that our participants details are protected. I am more than happy to chat to you regarding your concerns but would prefer if we can keep our discussions civil and not resort unsavoury statements below. The information that Janine was “spewing” was in fact imparted to her by myself and my fellow director, who has spend my many hours ensuring that we are completely up to speed as regards the POPI act and its implications.

I look forward to chatting if you feel if would be of value.

Kind Regards

Dave

Hi Janine,

I really didn't expect you to have anything other than the answer below. It appears again that all you are doing is spewing Information that has been given to you as clearly you have not got a clue about the POPI act.

I suggest you look at all the social media forums which have exploded with dissatisfaction on this medical questionnaire. It seems like the Argus organizing committee is taking its lead from Jacob Zuma and his government as to how to go about ignoring their stakeholders.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your message / comments.

This is the same medical process as used by the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, just with a slight variation of the questions to make them relevant to cycling.

Since it is the first year we are using it in a cycling context, there will certainly be questions that we find we need to tweak to make it more useful in future.  Regarding the confidentiality of the data, as you appear to already know, medical data carries extra requirements from a POPi perspective.  For this reason, the data is stored on a server commissioned for this purpose by our medical partner MediClinic.  Only medical staff approved by them have access to the information.

So unlike in the past, Cycle Tour staff do not even have access to the medical data for each entrant.

Ok, so what do we do now?

The extended the deadline, doesnt really solve the problem

I have tried every network possible, nothing is working.

Do I have to request a refund?

What a complete hassle has this process been so far.

Look on the bright side guys, at least the Argus is going to be a lot safer next year. Due to the fact that about 100 people actually did the 'questionaire' there should be 34 900 riders less on the route

you ignore the questionnaire. No way they are going to deny you entry.
