well I was out and about on the weekend. Managed a 60km ride at 15km/hr with an average HR at 134. it is a little on the high side given the slow speed, but at least I felt good.

on the downside to things so far, I bought a new saddle. Lets just say the saddle chaffe is not good - I am even thinking of going back to my old saddle. If things dont improve during the course of this weeks riding, I am going back to the old saddle. Also, I got a cut in my back tyre 1 km from home. Slime was EVERYWHERE! yucky stuff that slime. Needless to say that samurai plug magafta thingy I could not find in my bag, so just walked the last km home. Lucky the bike shop had one this morning and showed me how to use it on my tyre.

Today I was meant to go for a 30 km really easy ride in terms of gearing and HR (wanted to stay in lower 2's of the HR scale), BUT this digger loader came past, and some little kid inside just jumped and chased it down to sit in the slipstream and freewheel along for a few km. Blew the training plan out the water - but so worth it for the hell of it and fun and the smile I had for the rest of the afternoon.

Boss, there is no way that I would be able to get from slow 60k rides to a slow 1000k ride in a month. I envy you boys and girls who can. Good luck. Following this thread with interest and best wishes

I am not sure of your formula SB.When I was really fit I did a lot of 100km mtb rides and 150 to 200km road rides and I was pretty stuffed after them. And I was not racing.I would not have dreamed of tacklng a non stop 1000km.You really need to test yourself and do one of these mini Mungas doing the rounds so you can gauge where you stand.

Maths was never a strong point, zero here, a zero there, it all adds up in the end I think!

So not really sure either. The problem with a test yourself is the time. I just dont have the time right now. Next weekend I will be going for a "long" ride. Looking at 7-8hrs, both on Saturday and Sunday.

If I dont start getting in big hrs on the weekends i WILL be in trouble and the Munga will become ALOT harder than it already is.

will have a look at the website now

this be the only option ?

Just spoke to the guys at extreme lights. Pieter was extremely "pun intended" helpfull.

Basically he said the endurance light should last 40 hrs - but rather bank on 35. So if you take 7 hrs of darkness needing light that is 7 x 4 = 38hrs.

If you factor in one sleep having access to electricity that is one recharge which should get you through the whole event. BUT!!! is R2295. thats ALOT of money for a light for one event. Even if I buy it and try sell it again, I "may' be able to sell it at about half price, maybe more. Still alot of cash to fork out.

Slowbee, I have done sone testing with lights, and at the end of the day, the R2200 you are spending will be worth the little hassle you will experience by having this.

Your other alternatives are:

1) Torch, head mounted or handlebar mounted, with a kakload of spare batteries.

2) dynamo to charge rechargeables. (Plenty moolah)

3) solar charging unit (slow, and sometimes cumbersome.)

When it comes to night riding, you want something that gives decent light, a headlamp may not be sufficient.

I have not had experience with multi day events, I just know that for the limited night riding I do, the lights I bought (magicshine) is superior to any other form of lighting I have tried.

My plan is to run 2 batteries,on my normal Ryder light on medium setting.

i have a set of lights i used for desert dash. they are old and even on low they just made it for the 6 or so hrs. the battery back is ancient and they are not LED's, so I do need a set. Given that alot of riding will be done at night it might be worth investing. Unless someone wants to let me use their's?

Just a side note, I till have a petzl tikina 80 lumen light on the helmet. And I will have spare batteries. Experience has shown it good to have a light shine where you look. Otherwise you land up pointing the bike like in the direction you look, which never really ends well.

one sleep you say

one sleep you say

Flip I wish !!!! The winner slept for 4 or so hours last year. I will not have a hope in hell of finishing with only one sleep. Unless it is for a solid 8hrs. So highly unlikely.

This is what I said

So of the 4 sleeps I am planning, at least one of them should have access to electricity. Earlier in this thread I posted that I was planning on 4 to 6 hour stops per rest point. If I only recharge the batteries (mine and the lights and the GPS and the cell phone, and the ebike battery ;-) :whistling: ) then me, myself and I should be ok.

I am excited just reading everyones post, and i am not even riding it!

FWIW if it were my money i would go with a dynamo type light. One less thing to worry about!
