Need to for train for 70.3 ironman in January 2016. Swimming pools in area? Training partners?

Sorry I can't help you with a training partner :whistling:  and as far as I know there is only one fairly large swimming pool in the area, being the indoor pool at Hartenbos next to the "koffiehuis". I assume it will be fairly crowded this time of year though.

George 50km away has a large public pool if I'm not mistaken.

Perhaps use the sea in the Santos beach area, nice and big and not crowded!

I trained in the lagoon. Water was fairly shallow but could do a bit of training there. Cycling...back road to George...but a bit dodgy with cars. Good rolling hills to mimic East Londen. Not sure if there is public pool at the trampolines.

Saw a documentary on the myth of breaching Great White sharks........Hartenbos, Voorbaai and Santos beaches........not a myth anymore.

Vleesbaai has a nice protected bay for an open water swim.

Don't believe everything you see on tv. It is all hype generated for viewing pleasure. Natgeo was even caught out a while ago using some local actors to pose as traumatized "witnesses" in one of their documentaries!

There are no Whites at Santos beach, the safest beach in Mossel Bay. Would certainly not recommend Diaz beach as it is close to seal island and Vleesbaai is a 40km drive from Hartenbos.

40km cycle, swim, 40km cycle back.......training done.

Those Mosselbay sharks are so domesticated.......and full of tricks. The harbour wall is their favourite hangout at night time. Such friendly creatures......always greet you with a great white smile.

mmmm they do tend to swim around :) but I still wont be to bothered, used to spear fish at skuins bankies, a very popular place for catching sharks. chances are very slim of an attack

Don't swim in the Hartenbos lagoon!! There's an outfall near the train bridge.

The water at the Klein Brak lagoon is fairly clean and deep enough to swim in. Just take note of the tides - the currents can get quite strong (not dangerous, but annoying).

From Google Earth - on Hartenbos estuary: "A local wastewater treatment plant discharges partially treated water into the estuary and it’s considered to be the main source of nutrients (particularly phosphorous) in the coastal system. Additionally, overflowing septic tanks also contribute to the allochthonous nutrient load of the estuary. "

There is also an outdoor pool at the Htb "pret park". I reckon early-ish (opening time) morning swims would not be too over crowded.

santos swim would be fine.park anywhere near santos or munros baai and swim up and down from the yachtclub to the end of santos beach.i have been swimming there for 40 years.the sharks are at the island near hartenbos side.

Not true.

There are tracked GW's from Moz to down south.

True story.

Perhaps you misunderstood. I am not saying they are not here, in fact there are many. Having lived in Mossel Bay for 25 years, I can assure you they do not frequent Santos beach or the harbour wall. They are often seen from Diaz beach towards Hartenbos and Kleinbrak as well as the point.

In any case, there are no records of whites attacking swimmers here, always surfers or divers or spearos and never in the area of Santos beach.

I'll be in Dias beach from the 2nd of January, not training for IM but Definitely doing some triathlon training, with a few openwater swims and long bike sessions....
