Beginners Road Bike Advice

Hi All

I'm new to the forum and I'm a total noob when it comes bikes nowadays. Last time I drove a road bike was back in school days, so I'm not familiar with brand names and parts.

I have work colleagues that are cycling, but I wanted to hear from the experts a decent bike to start off. Budget is kinda low, so anything in the range of 3k-5k. No need for Carbon fibre right now, as long it's a decent bike to start off with.

Thanks

MJ

Welcome welcome,

Rode a bike

Drove a car ;)

Steel is real anyway, even if budget wasn't an issue, there are always lekke old steel bike coming up in the classifieds

What size you looking for??

With that budget I would look at a bike with 10 speed 105 components around 5 yrs old.  That way you can stay with the best - assuming you have the legs - and can move the bike on without loss if you quit or upgrade. Check out three things 1) Size 2) Size 3) www.bikepedia.com.  The last is helpful to verify that the dates and components are as specified.

^ what David said.  Minimum 10 speed Shimano 105 groupset.

There are a few online size calculators to give you an idea if you do not know what size frame you require.  Here is one http://www.ebicycles.com/bicycle-tools/frame-sizer

I would also recommend within the first month or so going for a bike fit, which will cost around R600-800 so that you get set up on the bike for the correct and comfortable riding position.

There will be nothing worse to put you off riding than being uncomfortable on the bike and having back, shoulder and other pains from riding.  A bike fit will hopefully alleviate this.

And welcome to the hub :)

My first bike was a 8spd Sora groupset Haro alu bike. Did a 3:10 Argus with it before going carbon. As long as the fit is correct you will enjoy it. Remember cycling shoes and clipless pedals as well. You will go faster easier.

Hey man,

My height is about 1.65m and weight is about 70kg.

I think the small one should fit me.

I do see a few Raleigh bikes on gumtree going for cheap, but not sure to avoid those or not.

I agree with this and would add a butt measure to get  the correct size saddle...especially if you have a slightly bigger frame than most...and just as important decent bib...with some mootie just to help in the beginning or if you going for a long ride.

just read your post...doubt you would require a butt measure the standard 143 saddle shouldnt be a problem.

Buy the best you can afford as long as it fits you properly

If you can afford it buy an entry level bike from a dealer who can give you solid advice on the spot about the bike you like (there are quite a few in the SSubs)

you can get a great deal on a second hand bike on this forum but you will need to know what you are buying

Ask your mates that ride for a bit of advice and buying assistance if you decide to go the second hand route

you should go hang out at a bike shop one Saturday morning ask all your questions - buying isn't an obligation that's what your local bike shop staff are there for and don't be embarrassed to ask questions - every single person on this forum or in a bike shop was a noob once
