Sealant 101

Most latex sealants like Stans you can but the slime based ones are normally to thick to get down Presta valve stems, so in that case you need to pop the bead to feed it in on one side of the tyre.

Yeah....what he said. Rather standardise on Stans . Buy one small bottle (60 ml?) and a big one from which to refill it. The small squeeze bottle has a nozzle you can use to inject via the valve stem ( remove the valve core first). This way the tires stay seated and you inject a consistent amount each time. Then refit the valve core and pump up normally

No mess no fuss. Doing it this way a few years now.

Just take it to your local filling station. Use the compressor there to seat the tyres. Just get one of those totties that you use to make your valve work on a car valve compressor. First prize however is a home compressor you can use it on your bike wheels, your car wheels you can even respray your bakkie with it!

hahahahahahaha

You tottie!

Only reason I use Joes... I can CO2 it.

Tried with Stans and it was a huge mess and did not seal after CO2

On a commute to work there is no time to waste with a pump...

I was blown away by how much these latex based solutions can seal.

Long story short - we were cycling over the break on a game farm up near Alldays in thick thorny bush.  i must have upwards of 30 punctures or weep holes in my tires after 6 rides - yet they held up. They needed a pump up at the end of the ride and in the morning as they lost a bit of pressure - but that was all.

There are a forest of thorns inside of my tyres right now.

Interesting though, i normally use Stan's but forgot to take with me so I topped up with a mate who gave me some Joes and I noticed that it seemed to seep more than Stan's has ever done., Not sure why as they are both Latex based.

I've been told i'm NOT allowed to touch the OH's bike :)

such love....

so trying to match the sealants no longer an issue.

but I'm gonna try clean it out and put it back and top up and all that so I don't have to go to the LBS every so often just for my tires.

You're a lucky girl! Did you get that in writing?

OH/SO can now take care of it's own bike. Absolves you of any responsibility. By the way, did you win?

Not yet. One broken tyre lever and the tyre is all stuck on itself. This sucks

Learned my lesson with too much mix and match - becomes a gooey mess after a while.

If you're not sure what's in the tyre, rather take it off completely, wash it out and start afresh. I've used Joe's for the past two years with no complaints.

That said, I've got a couple of large bottles of Stans I got from a CWC special which will be going into the next set of wheels.

Don't worry anyone that has been through that process has been there done that, some tyres can be really tough to get the bead on/off the rim. Decent tyre levers and a little bit of technique is vital though.

this reminds me of the time I was so proud of myself for putting my bar ends on myself, posted pics here on the hub only to be told - um Uni, you've put them on the wrong way round

so it took me just under an hour to eventually get the tyre off the rim.  Apparently I wasn't supposed to take the WHOLE tyre off. Doh #1.

I rinsed it out - not much of sealant left - maybe 2 tablespoons. I then proceeded to peel off the latex bits cause it was ugly - Doh #2

so now I'm left with a tyre that I need to get back on and have it do what a tubeless is supposed to do , and I want to do  a ride tomorrow night so I conceded and took it to the pros.

Guys 101 means 101  assume noob level 1.

at least now I know it's latex based :)

thanks for all the help / patience here and elsewhere

Don't worry mounting tubeless tyres has reduced many grown men to tears, topping up the sealant through the valve stem is relatively painless though.

Pic no 1 looks normal for a tyre that has had Stans in for a while. Don't bother trying to pick it all off. very time consuming. Just peel off the strips that form near the bead of the tyre 'cause they can affect the seal when you refit the tyre.

If you look inside your rim and the so-called "rim-bed" where the tape is fitted, it usually has a lowered part in the centre and two raised "shoulders" near the side walls. When seated, the tyre bead sits on these raised shoulders to provide a tight seal. When removing or refitting the tyre it will be too tight unless you push as much of the tyre bead as possible into that lowered centre part of the rim bed. This is what gives the clearance for the tyre bead to fit over the sidewall of the rim.

My Schwalbe Rocket Ron weeps like mad, it's covered in weeping stans. But it does not lose pressure for some reason, but the weeping does not stop. I just leave it like this now. Seems to be a usual thing with some Schwalbe's. I do top up through the valve, but have had times where the sealant then stuffs the little rubber seal on the valve and makes it leak. Then have to remove the core and clean it out again.

I have always managed to seat the tires with a floor pump (and lots of cursing and sweat), using sunlight on the beads, but it's always been quite a mission.

Also, the stans bottle needs to be shaken like mad, I think all the good stuff sinks to the bottom of the container when sitting for a month or whatever.
