Same goes for guns.... Majority of people that carry will never be able to shoot someone.

I have never heard of people stabbing sheep to practice knife skills.Maybe slaughtering cows and sheep at traditional events count.

I'd rather have something and not need it....than not have anything and need it   :whistling:

GUMMI IF YOU WERE STILL LOCAL WOULD YOU CARRY????

ANY FORM OF PROTECTION OTHER THAN CYCLING KIT AND CONDOMS

Not while cycling...the risks outweigh the pros of carrying a gun on a bike.

I do carry a knife to open boxes all the time  :whistling:

Are there any people out there - on the forum - or even anecdotal - that managed to defend against a hijacking or assault by drawing a weapon they were carrying for that purpose?

Would be interesting to hear of them and from them.

Hi Paul,

I have spoken to cyclists in 3 incidents. Unfortunately can't give names (selective memory)  or specific places, but in Gauteng.

1st was a group of cyclists that got attacked whilst riding through very long grass. 1 cyclist had a firearm and used it effectively after getting bumped off his bike. - 3-4 Perps left in haste. Cyclists unhurt & nothing taken.

Lone cyclist riding next a busy/major round - perp walking towards him, shoots from quite a few meters away & hits the cyclists. Cyclist draws & fires back & perp killed on the spot. - no issue with the police.

The other was well publicized in the papers & media, re guys going out & looking for the bike jackers.

In these 3 examples, everything was different about each incident: unarmed / armed perps; remote location vs busy road; number of cyclists; etc. So there is no formula. You just have to be in that mindset unfortunately.

When cycling alone, i stay away from tall grass and remote single track. In groups, I find that I let my guard down which is great, but not so great. This is Africa, so you have to be aware, always, unfortunately.

But it is a choice to carry or not. Each confrontation is different with a myriad of possible outcomes. It just depends on whether you want to have a say in any of those outcomes.

As an aside, from speaking to regular Joe's & seeing a few You Tube vid's on armed robberies: when the victim turns on the perp/s, and lead starts flying, the perp normally leaves the scene right pronto, & most of these average Joe's aren't on the range, firing of 1000's of rounds a week or being trained by the Navy Seal's... So the firearm does even out most situations, IMO.

But it's a choice.

That's why they having so many women attacked in Europe. They know the laws and know that you can't even carry pepper spray.

In Belgium cops can't even raid houses at night or early morning.

Whatever you get.....make sure it's quickly and easily accessible......you are willing to use it.......you do some proper training.........

Or you can just act up and play along, give them your bike and when they turn to run you shoot them in the back.
