Hi guys

Just thought I would start a thread on Children's nutrition

I have a 4 and half year old son who is a "maar gat" and I need to put more meat on the oke. He is extremely active at the moment coming off the holidays. Lots of swimming and now also got him on the bike which he is loving.

He is definitely burning more than I can actually get into his body. He has a healthy appetite and we have never struggled to get him to eat. He is currently weighing 16,4 kg and his 2 year old brother has now over taken him at 16,7kg.

Any suggestions to beef the boy up.

Mine is having the same problem. Average height, below average weight. Eats like a horse, but just burns all of it off. Hasn't hit 15kg yet and he's 3 1/2. Still wearing 18-24m shorts. We try to get as much into him as possible, and he has a really good appetite, but he just won't put on any weight...

I think he's just destined to be a bit of a beanpole until he can actually eat enough to put on any sort of meaningful weight. He's not unhealthy - just slim.

I seriously wouldn't be too concerned about beefing the lad up, especially if he's so active. My son is 16.9kg at 4 years 3 months. Also eats plenty but is constantly active....never sits still. Very normal according to the quack...

fabes..i was a skinny laaitjie my entire life...always had a ribcage showing. I played sport all year round and did a lot of running. If the oke is eating then all good...its only a problem if he is skinny and not eating. my 2 daughters are complete opposites - one is tall and thin and the other is short and stocky...its just genetics as someone mentioned.

Other than that I am certainly not gonna try suggest a diet as I have absolutely no experience in that

Don't stress too much.

My guy just turned 10 in December and is a serious skinny and very small for his age but he has started to eat me out of house and home and it's great.

He does a serious amount of sport, if I mention it all I will definitely be judged into the "pushy parent" fold but he lives it!

Make sure that what your son does get in are not empty calories and count for something, for example, we do milkshakes after "long" rides (Nesquick but I add some Ensure in and call it "big boy" milkshake-so I'm adding extra stuff in at the same time)

Do not fall into the trap of allowing him to eat sweets etc and empty calories just because he is skinny - remember to start how you want to end!

At the end of the day - they all grow eventually some just faster and taller or wider than others!

Gaybes, jokes aside just because we all know you as GIANT this does not mean your laaitjie will be a giant from the start,(remember it took hours of gym work and truck loads of "supplements" for you) honestly between you and your stunning wife I think he will turn out more than ok ;)

Genetically gifted,,,,,,on moms side, with a super gran like Jax what you worried about, he has a granny who smoked the EPIC

I am not too worried about it dips, I was just wondering if there are any other parents who have a "maar gat" and have they done anything to change the diet etc to ensure the laatjie gets more calories Into the body

Gaybes my babs is 7 she stops when she falls asleep, she has a six pack and if she eats a peanut you can see it, I know she is a girl still it does not matter how much she takes in she is too active to make a dent, rather bones than fat,,,trust me bud I'm no dietician but I reckon anything added now will become an issue down the line, I wish I stayed thin at school instead of going the gym route who knows I might still be thin !!!!

Portia clocks 22 she is seven

I reckon his weight and height is 10/10

Yep. It just gets burnt off again! At his creche, he routinely goes back for 2nds and even 3rds sometimes. He eats the most out of every one of his classmates, and he's the 2nd smallest in the class - only beaten by a girl who is the "runt" twin.

It's just how he is... And I'm also really glad to see we're not alone either!
