Flat Pedals vs Flat SPD Pedals vs SPD Pedals

I'm going to make an unpopular statement:

If your feet bounce around or lift from the pedal when you are not wearing cleats then you are totally unconnected with your bike and you lack the basics skills to consider yourself a competent mountain-biker.

If you find yourself in this position, switch from cleats to flats for a while.

If you find yourself in this position, switch from cleats to flats and learn mountain-biking. If you are unwilling or not capable to do this you are in fact a dirt-roadie, i.e cyclocross rider with too much bike.

Go and race some cyclocross then come back and compare dirt roadies to cyclo cross riders. I know several millions belgians that would happily make the trip to SA to box your ears for that comment :-)

Quick question on seat height with flat pedals: is the a sepcific formulae for this as its different that wearing cleats?

The web suggest a few methods but non are realy flat pedal specific. A common one is the heel on the pedal method were the leg should be straight with the pedal at the bottom and heel on above pedal axle

For me what works best is the:

Heel on pedal with the pedal at its lowest point  then my knee is just locked out.

BUT it will depends on whether you're a heelp up/heel down/heel flat rider.

Just so long as it's not too high that when you pedal your hips don't move side to side and you should be sorted.

As a rough guide I use inside leg length multiplied by 107% to get the pedal to seat height. I like to ride a slightly lower seat than optimal though, so I usually end up dropping that by about 2 cm. I do however have a 98cm inside leg length.

Ok cool. Gonna give this method a try as a starting point. Thanks

Ride Report 2:

Wow, what a great ride today. So much better than last weekend's ride as the conditions were great and not muddy like the last one.

As far as the effeciency decline i felt last week, it was so much better today and think conditions played a big role. I made all the hills i normally do:).

There is this long downhill section, not technical, and at the end there is a sharpish turn and then an uphill. Normally i brake fairly hard to make the corner but this time i only slightly braked and managed to nail it round so was super chuffed with that.

Having said that though, there were two other corners that i blotched as i ran straight into the bush due to going too fast...lol

Regarding the pedals, my feet do still move around a bit on them but i think they are worn and really old so will invest in a new pair as in plan to ride like this until i am comfortable and have increased my skill:).

I even hit my normal jump i like to do and although i never got nearly as much air as clipped in, i managed to stay with the bike more. This will take a bit more practice.

I did notice today that 3 strands of cable snapped just after the nut itss tied to by the RD. Should i change the cable or is ok to leave it like this? What would cause this? Probably cos i am putting down enormous power down with the flats...lol...

One other thing, i dont seem to get as far back as with cleats and presumably because my feet are now in a more central position on the pedals right? Should i look at a shorter stem (currently on 60mm) or just move the saddle a bit more forward.

Having the feet more central helped alot on my ride today and all in all a much better ride so super chuffed with that :-)

Yep that's the ones. I'm super impressed with mine, they do bite though so be careful... When pushing your bike [emoji5]

Hi guys, so tested the pedals today. Enjoyed it a lot.

I know its not the right place to post this however maybe it will help someone. I decided to only keep one set of pedals, so I am selling the other set. They were only used for one ride. Paid 525 and have slip. If anyone is looking for a set you can take them for 400 as I am only keeping a set for my trail bike.

First ride with the saints and they are awsome!

Took all the washers out for better group and had no issues with grip this time round. I had to make sure that my foot was properly positioned or i would have to lift my foor off the pedal to reposition wheres with the old pedals i could just slide my foot around but that was not good.

They have a very nice feel and a low profile, so much lower than my old chunky Mongoose ones.

Super stoked with them and its money well spent.
