2016 motivation for getting lighter and faster

Recommended Posts

Last year i fell short of 2 of my goals...

1/ Ride from the bottom of the M19 to Pinetown...this is now a priority for 2016...would have completed it already but security on the climb is an issue...i will do it with a group soon.

2/ Loose enough weight to go below 100 kg...only managed to drop from 128.1 kg to 105 kg then went back up to 108 kg in 2015...now in panic mode because i just cant seem to drop or maintain the weight.

This year my goal is to get lighter and faster.

Lighter....I want to get down to around 95 kg.

Faster...When i started in Jan 2015 my avg speed was around 19km/hr...middle of the year it went up to around 25km/hr...by Dec 2015 now at around 27 km/hr and improving slowly...unfortunately i dont have any devices on my bike to measure power...cadence or HR...so for now i just measure by the avg speed at the end of the rides...I hope one day to keep up with my mate at 50 km/hr around the circuit... one day when i get thinner and faster...so far i have only managed to get to 42 km/hr and stay there for a short period of time.

How am i gona achieve these goals...a healthy eating plan and lots more time in the saddle...I also want to join a cycling club...i have latched onto a few social rides with both cycle specialist (the fellas in the orange shirts) in December and last weekend enjoyed an airport loop from Durban with kings park cycling club (kpcc yellow shirts) the riders in both groups were very friendly and made me feel welcome...thanks ladies and gents.

Please feel free to share your goals for 2016 and how you plan to achieve them...if you want to share your eating plan and strava profile please feel free to do so.

Give it horns Mr Isetech, with your positive attitude, you can do it. Good idea to join a club, meet people, etc, make it a lifestyle and it becomes a healthy habit. All the best to you for 2016 and achieving your goals.

Forget about the getting faster part - that comes automatically with time.

If you want to lose weight you should focus on long slow rides. It's the 3h + morning rides on an empty stomach that will eat up your fat reserves.

You need to switch your body operational mode to burn energy from fat instead from your carbo storage.

I like your goals. But don't get too obsessed. You need to keep the fun part in the cycling. Having fun is the best motivation out there IMHO :-)

Motivation comes and goes. Rather focus on being dedicated, come heatwave, rain or winter chills you get on that bike and ride. Time in the saddle is habit forming and before long you will crave your next ride. Mix it up, intervals during the week and Z2/Z3 rides on the weekend with a club.

Success on the bike will be a combination of what you do on the bike as well as off, particularly how you eat.

That m19 climb is a beeyatch, but once you get into your tempo it's pretty easy. You just have to keep on going. Agreed on the safety issue though. Coming back down is a blast!

Good luck, ise. We're in the same boat. My goal is to be 90kg by the end of the year. Gonna need to have some hectic willpower to get there, cos I've come to the realisation that I'm addicted to food. And lots of it.

Here starts (continues) the journey.

as the guys have mentioned already, just be dedicated and everything will fall into place.

I've been through something similar last year starting off at 105kg. Set a goal of 4hours for the Shova which was difficult as I started at the back which meant not many people to work with.

From June to October I worked HARD, came race day my weight was 89 and I came home in 3:42.

Keep working, dont stress too much about the scale and make sure you enjoy what you doing.

I did manage to do 3 x 100 km rides in 2015

strava 100 km challenge - 6 and a half hours out on the road...moving time 5.20

amashova - 4.35 out on the road...moving time 4.15

and again to finish off the year last month another 100 km strava challenge...3.58 moving time...getting faster slowly but surely...

I must say riding in a group certainly make it easier...riding 100 km solo on my first 2 attempts were flippen hard work...the last one was part in a group...felt like i was cheating ;)

Two options:

1. Ride with a faster group; or

2. Take longer pulls at the front of this group

A little suffering goes a long way :D

Also, get yourself a few pairs of Assos bibs...

They'll truly revolutionise your life...  ;)

got smart last year and invested in a few pairs...certainly does make the long hauls a lot more comfortable and the the riding experience less of a pain in the butt...being a fat oke i managed to get them at a really good price...R1500 ea...the only catch is as my legs  and backside are turning from fat to muscle the legs are getting loose and the chamois moves.

yip that is what i have been doing...ride with a group until someone over takes us then chase the faster group...only problem is i am not sure that some groups like it when you hop on for the ride...one of the faster riders explained to me why they dont like it.

all it takes is a newbie like myself to get into the pack and touch one of them or interfere with their training segments...i also dont use hand signals etc yet ...still learning...and i am hanging onto the bike for dear life...focusing on not bumping anyone.

so if you see me hanging around at the back of the group and dont take the lead now you know why...

now to figue out a way to get my mind to wrap around the eating plan and stay focused again.

something i learnt about healthy eating...you have to put in the effort to go out and buy the right food...prepare the food and pack it for during the day especially...because i am on the road all day.

eating healthy is not cheap.

You have to tell your wife about your goals. I've saw the stuff she bakes for you- it's not gonna help. She needs to come on board as well.

I've lost 18 kg last year and hope to shed the last 7 before the Emperors.

Second goal is a sub 3 Argus and then to do PB's on all the races.

Hmm. It actually is, if you put the time in. This last week I've pre-made everything for the week's dinners. Breakfast has beeen 3 scrambled eggs and chilli sauce, lunch a little bit of cheese and then dinner is grilled chicken, veg & stampkoring. I cook EVERYTHING up front, refrigerate and then take out in the morning. Only meal I cook on the day is the scrambled eggs, and those can be done in the microwave very easily (30sec, stir. 30 sec, stir. 30 sec, stir)

Eggs are DIRT cheap, for the protein & nutrients you get. You can shop around for decently priced cheese. Veg is cheap, and you don't need to go to WW for meat. It's half the price at checkers or Food Lovers or Oxford.

You just have to stick with it, and cut out the snacking / pies / sandwiches etc. Can easily do a week's worth of food for approx R 200. Massive savings...

THIS. And the "she's looking after me" talk is bull****. If she were looking after you, she'd respect your wish to lose and not tell you to see if you can resist the cookies / baking / cakes etc.

Sorry for being an ass, but in order for this to work, it needs to happen.
