edgarblount Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Hi All, This is not a rant about shocking service. It is a question wrt getting shocked between the legs while riding underneath electical wires. When riding underneath electical wires I get a ting on the brake levers and a shock from underneath the saddle. When riding with baggies all is well. Riding with lycra I get the shock of my life. Any ideas on what I can do\apply\not do? Maybe rubberising all the allu on the saddle?
CMK Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 This is new, is this on tar? I ride under electrical wires all the time. no problems

edgarblount Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Have you tried with no clothes at all?I'll give it a try this evening. Will have to be after 12.
Ed-Zulu Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Edgar, you might just have big brass balls, that attract current...you should be pleased about this!
SLEASK Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 It happens quite often with me. Also thought it was the alu seatpost but I've upgraded to carbon and notices it also happens. First time it happened I thought I got stung by a bee on my inner thighs. Only after a while I figured out it was the electrical wires when I was cycling with a friend and we both jumped out simultaneously out of our saddles screaming in pain!!. Im sure weather/humidity plays a big part in that. But for now there's 2 places where I go underneath them and I ALWAYS stand and sprint past!!

Edge540 Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Just goes to show that mtb'ers have got it right. Baggies are the only way to go
Ed-Zulu Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 It happens to the wife as well... Hmm...interesting
So Is Es Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 My Wife used to have the same problem on her old allu stead to overcome this she used to make sure that while going under the lines that some part of her skin would touch some part of the metal parts on her bike. eg. push knee against frame or wrist on to handle bar and if fingerless cloves and metal brake handles just keep fingers on handleAs far as I know it is its a electrical field that builds up underneath the lines and you pick up a small charge.
Pete the Pirate Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Have you tried bunnyhopping over the wires
Gravity Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 happens to me too, only when the lines are humming.I thought it is Eskom providing value added service and letting you know when your interval starts and ends.
