Hi I would like to introduce mountain biking at the high school where I'm staying. The school doesn't have a big variety of sports but I believe mountain biking will be excellent. The school is in the mountain and we have some of the best tracks in the country on our door step. We are close to Tzaneen Limpopo. The headmaster is very keen and I have his support. I already have about 25 students that is very interested. Some of them already have bicycles, but for some I'm trying to get. I do have a small budget at the moment but I'm trying to increase it by getting some sponsors. I don't want to make a mistake by buying the wrong bicycles, but I am limited with the budget I have. At the moment I need 15 bicycles but I only have R 1500 per bicycle available. I would love any advice, ideas or even sponsor. Thank you Adriaan

Maybe contact Ben Vorster or Merensky High schools and have a word with them. I know Frans du Toit in Phalaborwa does MTB. They might get you in contact with the right people.

MTB seems to be fastest growing sport in some schools. The anatomic schools series draws a huge number of entrants from schools especially Gauteng.

IMO there is no thing as a wrong bike possibly only wrong size. In the price bracket you are looking at there is basically no bike available new and possible 2nd hand that you can just get on and ride you will need to pay extra cash to get it in some working condition.

I would for starters possibly buy the Raleigh bikes from Makro (Possibly negotiate with them for a more decent price for the higher end bikes they sell. They are a bit heavy, shifters etc. not the best but would do the job for now. Seeing that the kids are only starting out now the bikes will do well. Should the skills increase you can basically look to upgrade to better equipped bikes.

I have seen kids ride these kind of bikes in the anatomic series and nothing wrong with them.

Look under Cycling South Africa - Developement - Schools. or www.amarider.co.za and chat to Meurant. I know there is a Limpopo representative for South African Schools Cycling. Alternatively give Brett Coates a call at Valencia Cycles in Nelspruit he is CSA MTB chairperson and does the Mpumalanga Spur Series.

Please be carefull when selecting bikes and the Game/Makro specials you are looking at problems. Chat to the local bike store there are tough durable bikes available. Good luck with the programme.

Meurant is a bit swamped what with fighting Simosberg fires and the Oak Valley 24hr tomorrow.

He is however a great guy to talk to. Reply to my PM first - I can assist with Meurant AMArider as well.

Hi Adrian

Great idea! Sorry, I cannot offer advice, you will just have to make do with encouragement in stead! Go for it! With 2 teenagers in my household, I can tell you that the further you make them ride their bikes, the more human they become!  ;)

I have a quote for a bike called a rapid. It is 27, 5 inch wheels with front shocks and disk bakes and cost R1800 each. Any ideas about this bike?
