Cracked Anthem

I had the same choice last year after cracking my Alu frame. Went with the free replacement and haven't looked back. I believe that the actual frame weight difference is 400g, which is negligible. And for all the reasons given above, carbon won't make too big a difference on a dual suspension bike.

So I've upgraded wheels and brakes and now, not only is the bike even more brilliant, but it looks toit like a toiger too!

My Anthem cracked too, just before the Attakwas. The crack looked exactly like yours. It held for the race courtesy of a bit of strapping to keep it in compression. It's a 2010 model 26" size XL. I'm not the original owner so no warranty for me.

I'm actually pretty surprised to see that 5 years on, Giant still hasn't fixed the problem. I love the bike but I'm now in two minds whether I'm going to get another Anthem.

If anybody knows of somebody who has had their frame welded, please let me know.

Also if anybody has a 26er XL carbon anthem frame for sale, I'd be interested.

Thanks

I weigh between 79 and 82kg depending on how large the steak was the night(s) before... ride with two bottles on the frame and a top tube bag for food and bombs....

I have dropped the Adv Carbon frame very hard an it is absolutely fine.

The Anthem is a great bike, I really hope that the 2016 alloy model has solved this issue.

I bought myself the aluminium 2016 Anthem X last week. What an awesome bike. A friend of mine has the carbon 2016 XT version of the same bike. The weight isn't even noticable switching between the two bikes. The lighter carbon wheels on his bike probably make a bigger difference than the carbon frame.

Compliance and stiffness benefits are also negligible. Any vertical compliance benefits are going to be hidden by the suspension and most of the side to side flex happens at the pivots.

This!

if I had R10 000 in my pocket and concidering upgrading to an carbon Anthem from and Alu I would rather put the money towards a lekker set of Mavic rims.

I'm going with the 2016 alu which is free and improved. Got decent wheels so only need to buy the thru-axle.

I retract my post from earlier.... R10k to upgrade from the Alu to carbon frame is very steep.... rather put chinese carbon wheels on (I already have those)... 30mm wide, and weigh around 1550g for the set. Bigger weight saving than the frame.... and it's on your wheels, and you get extra width! it's like a super upgrade compared to the frame!

Is it common for the carbon frames to crack or break ?

Has someone noted what could be the cause of these frames cracking...heavy riders...seat post height...or is it just random frames that crack?

It seems to be an issue with alu mainly, hopefully the 2016 version fixes it.

Also seems to be the last 26er design and the 29er. That small connecting point of the upper tube. The 27.5 does not seem to suffer with this issue. So Giant did fix all the issues on the Anthem - They designed the 27.5 Anthem... that's why you even get the SX version with a bigger fork for even gnarlier rides.

But the 2016 29er has a similar top tube design as the 27.5 frame -  Should fix the issues on the 29er frames.

You also need to ensure that the seat post is long enough to extend past the weld and above but not to close to the pivot. Not sure on your height and frame size but looks like a medium frame which should cater up to a height of 1.8m. After that the seat height and weight of the rider behind the weld (i.e the lever arm) will put undue tensile stress on that weld. I have a medium anthem and am 1.74m and have had no issues. But I have had a creaking frame that I have learnt to live with and have tried every trick on this forum to be rid of but with no success

I can also confirm the weight saving in frame types is only around 400g

Larissa, your creaking frame is most probably the bearings on your rear stay where it bolts into the front triangle. Go and get your pivots replaced as well as the bearings... the creak will vanish.

I'm 1,78m on a large frame, did try a friends medium and felt very cramped. Seatpost is more than long enough.

I don't know how you can learn to live with a creaking frame. I won't ride the bike until the creak is stopped, and I've had many creaks/squeaks.

Are you sure your frame is not cracked?
