Helmet Import Duties

I have looked everywhere, but cannot seem to find any information regarding the import duty on a helmet.

I know the following:

  • Shoes: 30%
  • Clothes: 40%

Anyone have an idea on the import duties for helmets?

I bought in a giro helmet from the U.K about 2 years ago, and paid 14% VAT and nothing else, but then also bought a Chinese knock off and didn't pay anything when collected from the post office. I guess its luck of the draw.

You sure? Whole thread over here

Myles: it's not rated the same as clothing. It's still 25%, unless its a fireman's helmet, which is duty free.

Search for helmet at the following link.

What are the  4 categories for? I see 25% only under General. Does that mean importing from the EU, EFTA and SADC countries is duty free (except for VAT and handling OFC)?

It would appear that is the case. However, I think we get slapped with import duties under the General section because of the Rules of Origin, as in the "made in..."  label determines if the product falls within the existing trade agreements or not, despite where we bought the product from.

Just look at the General, Because you dont have a SADC Certificate or from the european Union or European free trade Association. ( thats the other 3)

Always use the General rate of Duty. And on some goods there are also Sch1 P2A and 2B Duties attached. But not on Cycling Goods, except Shoes and Cloths....

Lexx, check my logic here.

Thermo: here's the actual cause of the ball-ache: the definition of the concept of "originating products", with specific reference to Articles 4, 5 and 6.

Helmets bought from EU resellers most likely falls under the scope of duty-free exclusion as defined by article 6: insufficient working or processing protocols.

I checked my TLD and Giro lids, and they have some code for country of manufacture, and state that TLD or Bell/Giro are only the 'distributor'. No wonder we get wacked in the prison-wallet by SARS.

You need to have a EUR 1 Certificate, if you dont have one, then we will proceed by Charging you normal rate of Duty

It doesn't matter who the distributor is, the only way you will be able to pay no Duties, when there are duties attached to the products, is when you have the EUR 1, SADC, EFTA Certificate or have a rebate code. Otherwise, it will be charge as "General"

can Joe public obtain those certificates for personal use or is that only given to those in the course of trade, not consumption?
