First ride done  :thumbup:  - still had to do a bit of fine tuning to the shifting but it works as well as it did when it was in 10sp 'mode', even in the 42. 2 laps around Thaba means a lot of shifting so I think it was pretty well tested.

 

Don't need to comment on the 11 speed or 11-42 wide range as that has been well covered suffice to say that I was also one of those why get 11sp if my 10sp with 'gear extender' and 16 hack works just fine .... well lets just say that there is no doubt that the ratios on the 11sp are just so much smoother (no big jumps)

 

My other 2 bikes are both Shimano so this is not an option, they will stay 1*10 with the range extender/16 hack .... not unhappy with that though ;)

 

Have taken note of when I did the change and will track the mileage from here on. Lets see how it holds out!

With a 32t chainring you must do a lot of spinning or freewheeling down long fast descents?

 

Suppose that's the big advantage to the Sram's 11x but I you do have to pay an enormous premium for that.

At Thaba luckily there are no 'long' descents .... on my other bikes I have a 34 chainring and manage just fine, did the 'Fast One' without any issues as an example. I'm nowhere near the 'sharp' end of the field so hammering along at 50+ Kmph is not my thing fortunately. If it's a fast long descent I just go into that roadie 'tuck' and make the best of it  :devil:

 

just like single speed I guess it isn't for everyone  :blush:

Well I suppose there's the trails and there's getting to and from the trails, had a 34t and it was a bit of a pita sometimes on downhills, 32t must spin out really early.

Did you have a 11 speed freehub body already, or did you fit the 11speed cassette to your existing 10 speed body? 

I'm not very technically inclined, but this looks like a great idea for the price.

No need to fit another freehub to accept 11speed on an MTB, unless you go for the SRAM cassette, which has a different driver design due to the size of the 10t cog. 

 

Why is this the case with MTB and not road (in most cases)? Purely due to the size of the larger cogs, and the fact that they're able to dish them (make them concave) so that they can follow the curvature of the rim, therefore getting more cogs onto the same size freehub - the bigger cogs flare out, essentially.

afaik currently its only sram X1, XX1 and GX1 11speed cassette that new the XD or 11Spd driver(freehub body) the rest run the normal 10speed freehub

Great thanks!  That is exactly what I wanted to hear.  I have a Sram s1400 crankset (2015 Scalpel 3), are there any other considerations, or can I just slap one of these on with the conversion kit? http://www.evobikes.co.za/components/chainrings/wolftooth-direct-mount-for-sram-bb30-short-spindle-crankset.html

I have found that these things are often easier in theory than practice.
