I found this on MTBR: "Exact Actuation (Road 10 & 11sp, Mtn 10sp) is 3.1mm while X Actuation (Mtn 11sp) is 3.48mm"

Arts Cyclery backs this up with an interesting tabel that also covers Shimano and Campagnolo:

I've got a GX 11 speed set up as well so as soon as I can I'll try mixing up GX 11 Speed shifter with X9 10 speed rear derailleur and GX 11 speed rear derailleur and 10 Speed x9 shifter converted to 11 speed and see how it runs.

Ok, GX mixed with X9 doesn't work. The cumulative difference in cable pull by the time you get to the 42t side of the cassette is basically a gear cog width difference.

Thanks, this will be great!

I've also noticed that the guys uses a small shim/block just before the cable tight bolt and RD to increase the length there.

Did the 1x11 conversion last night to my XO 10spd setup using the Sunrace 11-42 cassette.  The XO 10spd derailleur clears the 42t cog fine but it can only just move over far enough to shift onto the 42t with the L screw all the way out.  This is putting a bit of strain on the shifter so I might take a Dremmel tool to the derailleur to try and increase the travel.

This does not sound right as your 42t should be aligned the same as when you had your 10spd cassette fitted - I cannot see the cog shifting further to the spoke end of the wheel?

Nope. 11sp is fractionally wider. 42t has a larger dishing and sits closer to the spokes in order to fit. That's how the 11sp and 10sp cassettes fit the same free hub body, whereas on a road cassette you need a new free hub or need to modify your existing one.

Thus 11sp 42t ring sits closer to the spokes than a 10sp 42t

Yes I just ground a bit off the half moon guide that the cable runs through as it was hitting the derailleur body thus preventing it from travelling far enough. The shifting is not perfect though but I can live with it until I can afford a proper 11spd setup.

The derailer cable entry might foul the body at max travel.

I filed mine a bit and work like a charm.

It did put a lot of strain on the shifter but not so after the mod .

Aah, I see - yet to get me an 11spd cassette. Would this hack need to be done in all cases when doing this conversion?

Yip, that is exactly what I have done as well.
