Another good bike computer android app is Urban Biker. Free and even has a bell function. Now to find a decent phone on bike holder for a Galaxy 5.

Have a look at the Quadlock.

Tim James has a built in GPS function and a senior/ very experienced SAA pilot, I reckon he knows the FC route better than most, but it was still very satisfying (in a perverse way) to see him going in circles late into the night and the early hours of the morning in the Vuvu Valley last year.

Dirtrider will tell you, you dont make memories by taking short cuts or the easy way - no debate, no GPS.

The most important feature of a bike computer is reliability - make sure it functions below freezing and some guys even take a backup, without it you will be at sea.

I took one off a bike in Rhodes and my mate Eric resorted to counting provincial km signs on fences to figure out how far to go - neither is optimal.

So go basic, reliable and oddly enough the one thing I would want is a reliable temp reading - nobody believes you are riding at -9, you need a photo of that. These things are important!

Haha - Too true re the temp story!

Since you did mention it Tubed, do you have a pic of riding in -9 C? And what the hell was that like?

I don't have a pic (kept moving to stay warm) but we had similar temps in our race when leaving Swartberg somewhere around 4am. Feet held up ok due to the Seal Skinz but my face just about went numb on the descents into the valleys and our hands were so cold we alternated them under our fleece thermal tops. Made for interesting riding down the loose rocky gravel roads.

All part of the fun though and made for one hell of an experience.

Last years contestants could share more stories - some rode in the snow.

Bit left field but how about a Newton Ibike Powermeter? Does all those things, doesn't have GPS as std (can add it) and I've seen them in the classifieds for a shade from R1000K if you're lucky.

Well is is gold plated and makes you tea each morning before you head out, a massage when you come back and doesn't complain if you see other Gps units on the side... ;)

Soz, auto correct. Should be R1000

Thanks Ryan and Tubed

Have got my hands on 2 Polar HRM's. Will use one for the daily trip distance and the other for the lap distances.

Will give them a test run on the R2C

Perfect.

I see you're in Durbs.

If anything changes re the Polar setup, I have a bog standard Specialized wireless computer you're welcome to use.

Those temps you normally get early in the morning . And then it looks like this the next morning .

Main thing for me with a trip computer was the size of the display . Besides the fact that I am night blind I am also not really eagle sighted during the day and you wanna be able to see what is going on with your trip meter when your teeth are rattling going down some old forgotten oxwagon trail !
