For me, it's actually pretty easy to get fit. Supposedly, I have good genetics :lol:

 

I just have to make sure I ride at least 4 days per week and when I do ride make sure it's a quality training session - whether that's long and easy or short and hard or short easy recovery. Medium rides are social rides with my buddies where I have fun and don't worry about training.

 

The trick is to stay motivated. After 25 years in the sport I still love riding and do it mostly for fun and skills development. I don't need much to motivate except when work keeps you so busy you are physically tired, it's then difficult to add in training very early in the mornings or at night.

1. Get a new bike, bib, piece of equipment or whatnot. Whenever one of my training buddies does this they somehow get superfit in no time.

this actually works for me... especially when the item cost big $$$ then I use it a lot more to justify the cost to myself.

I would like to think that the Holy Grail is not to let your goals and routine become so distorted that you completely let go when reasonably fit. I was just getting back into the swing of things when the wife had a fit about me riding alone. Stopped, but now in week 4 of gym and spinning and can feel a marked improvement. Working towards a level to become a decent weekend warrior now and join a group ride and not be stone dead last. Haven't felt this good in some time and using that as motivation

Dropped 6kg since December and working really hard to get fit again. Just felt like I was getting somewhere and had a big weekend planned for the bike

 

Then Thursday on the way to work got rear ended on the freeway. Felt numbness in my fingers once at work. Off to emergency and sent for an MRI. Now Im in a neck brace and have numbness in my left arm and in my face and may need surgery.

 

It's not been a few days but already I can feel my motivation slipping. All I'm allowed is gentle seasons on the trainer. Back to square one.

Hey lads. I've been in the fitness industry all my adult life including playing sports myself. Still play rugby. Theres 1 trick that helps me every time I need to really break through the barrier again. After every training session, run, iron, cycle, whatever it might be. I right on a black board on the back of my door. Was it really that hard! NO! Or something similar. It sounds silly but it WORKS! because everytime i don't feel like training i read the board and it puts me straight back into that memory i had when i wrote it. Then i erase it and go out to train. TRY IT!

I commute every day to work (99.9%). So there is always a base fitness. Plus using stairs and not the elevator helps loads. Getting into race fit mode takes about a month of training. The longest I went without riding was 7weeks in China. I tried it out and was scared and couldn't breath. I came back to two weeks of riding before doing die burger. Suffered but managed.

I must say, what works well for me is I took up commuting.

Ok, I accept I am fortunate that we have a gym at work so I can shower and change, as well as the fact that I live close enough to do it consistently.

In the morning I am all excited to be on the bike so generally take a bit of a longer route to work, and in the afternoons I am obviously less keen after a full day's work, but my choices are either to get over it and get on the bike to go home, or sleep in the office. :P

I do spinning classes during the week at gym and cycle outdoors on weekends.

The spinning has made my legs stronger and me fitter.The weekend rides I use for training and developing my skills.

I am a much happier cyclist now that I am fitter and stronger.You can achieve so much more.

Don't give up and just keep going at it.Eventually you will get there!! Try for small improvements at a time,instead of one large improvement.Use the small improvements to motivate you.Dont forget to rest inbetween,very important to prevent burn-out.
