Online HUGE price differences on components

Personally am glad to see a huge difference in price...

  • means that each shop decided its mark-up differently
  • could also be NOS or new stock depending on when the Forex was purchased for the orders to import
  • Proves that there is no Cartel with regard to prices for cycling goods
  • Is an open and free market... so shop around !!

I would be concerned if all the shops had similar prices... and for those prepared to shop around, you can get the best price or a bargain.

I guess its a little of getting used to buy from a certain supplier ,you tend to just go back without checking other online stores and unless you shop around you just pay the price thinking its a good/ the best price - I agree shop around

I see this UK site also inflates prices then says it offers a huge discounts.

Just did a test 6800 52/36 crank

http://bikesy.co.uk/s/6800%20crank/ GPB117

Merlin cycles https://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-ultegra-6800-chainset-62929.html GPB 100

CRC http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/shimano-ultegra-6800-double-11-speed-chainset/rp-prod108725 GPB108

Are you CRC preferences set for UK or SA? If it's SA then you'll not be charged the VAT so the cost is: £117.49 if uk based and £107.49 is In SA. Bikesy doesn't take into account your location and VAT I think.

You may be correct !!

Maybe it is to do with time of purchase as well.

Anything purchases 6 months ago and still in stock will be WAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper than something that just arrived in stock yesterday (thanks jacob)

Looks like we're in for a price decrease on shimano.... Humm. Wonder if that I'll fly in SA.

"Shimano has slashed prices across the board, with some high-end components receiving price reductions of up to 40 per cent. But if you’re a UK consumer you shouldn’t get too excited, as the changes will only have an impact on the other side of the Atlantic.

“We see price changes from an increase of one per cent to a decrease of 40 per cent,” said Wayne D. Gray, vice president Shimano’s US distributor, speaking to industry website Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. “There’s no specific percentage across the board, but there’s reduction in our recommended wholesale pricing and retail of many items.”

I have just recently left the industry and If I look back to my cost price from August 2015 Bring it on Cycles are below cost. This means that they have either had it sitting around for 2 years or it's off a bike.

Now given that there has been a big increase since then due to the exchange rate none of those prices are unbelievable to me. I wouldn't be shocked after the SONA to night to see prices going north of R6500 with the next shipment.

Edit: just go and have a look at CRC RRP all though those are slightly above RRP.

Will be buying ALL Bring it on Cycles stock tomorrow.

It is more than R1000 cheaper than wholesale??

Guess the item won't be available...

It's the seller's prerogative to price goods, the customer's prerogative to pay it or not. As others have noted, you don't know how much they paid for it upstream and with the mad exchange rate fluctuations (and potentially differing supply chains), there are bound to be big discrepancies.

Maybe there's a gap in the bicycle industry for a hippo-type site...?

Hippo only works cause all those different companies are actually all part of the same holding company, Telesure.  So you not actually shopping around with Hippo.

It may all depend on who is storing the stuff, to give you an example:

CWC probably has a warehouse and has stock that they control and pick when orders are placed, thus you have (at least) two factors at play - the warehouse and the staff to pick and pack the orders - both cost...

Easybike don't have either, they have 1 person monitoring orders and place the order with the distributor directly, the distributor has the warehouse and staff anyway to pick and dispatch, so easybike actually have little overheads and do little work in the whole deal thus the difference in pricing.

Not saying that is exactly how these two mentioned companies are run, I am using their names as pure examples...

Easy bike have a warehouse.

Easy bike have a warehouse.

Was an example, like I said, I am not involved in their businesses so I don't know their inner workings...I stand corrected if you want to quote me from my example.

Ok so both companies have a warehouse...How big is Easy bike's compared to CWC? that also plays a HUGE part in the costs.

Again I am going to use an example (don't take it literally) CWC may have a warehouse the size of a aircraft hanger covering 800sqm and Easy bike may have a converted double garage...which costs less?

The kind of volumes that you need to do to recover the costs of intergtaing into each shops DBs and map like for like products, would not make for a good business case in SA, unless you can generate revenue from other streams off the website.
