Depending on the erd of the replacement rim being the same as the old one - if its different then new spokes will be needed

It'll be the rim that's thrown away.

One could get good Chinese replacements and have Kiwi build them over onto a solid racing set.

You have to ask if risking your life on those is worth it ?

. I only paid R1k for it. He told me that he think they are not genuine. I was happy with them.

Well then, what did you expect ?

I have ridden on a repaired carbon rim and also on a Chinese carbon rim. I'll gladly do the same again.

But not on a  second hand set of (any)  wheels I bought for for R1000, particularly if I also know that the wheels are  fake.

is the whole wheel junked ?  or can the hub and possibly the spokes still be used ?  basically is there a way to make the best of a bad situation ?

For sure you can re-use the hub and possibly the spokes also. As long as spokes are not damaged when removed.

Correct - the Chinese can and do make quality products - and those suppliers who do make quality products do not feel the need to forge labels.

I have bought chinese parts (not branded) and they are 100%!!! No problem whatsoever
